In the story “Where Worlds Collide” by Pico Iyer, some cultures felt hurt due to the judgement from the Americans. In the bathroom it said, “Yes on proposition 187: Mexicans go home.” This shows that some of the Americans do not like Mexicans. Mexicans could see this as discrimination to their culture. The Mexican culture could feel un-welcome to America due to the judgement from some of the Americans. In paragraph six it said, “Stop the spread of Medfly” also shows how some cultures feel hurt by the judgement from the Americans. These foreigners could have felt embarrassed when they heard “Stop the spread of Medfly.” Foreigners could feel out of place or un-welcomed. In the story, Jing Mei’s mother says, “You look like a negro Chinese.” Jing Mei’s mother saying “negro” could be racist to different cultures. Also, it can be a sign of discrimination towards others by calling people or saying the word “negro.” Negro is a member of a dark-skinned group of people and the mother could be referring to Jing Mei’s look as a dark-skinned person. When Jing Mei’s mother got the idea for the Shirley Temple, she took her to the beauty training school. This shows that Jing Mei’s mother wanted to change the appearance of Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mother probably doesn’t like the way she looks and wanted her to look beautiful. In a real-life situation appearance can change due to a special event.
