Amanda Stenberg plays Maddy an 18-year girl with SCID or what she calls "bubble baby disease". She has had it for 18 years and has never been outside because of it. In the book, Maddy is a biracial child just like Amanda. Nick Robinson fits his Olly character perfectly as well. During the movie, you could really see magic between them. Maddy mother had her own mental problem. After her husband and son died she wanted to protect her daughter. Her daughter because of her obsession pretty much. In the movie, it is clear from the very beginning that Maddy dreams of being in the ocean. You might as well just call her a mermaid. When Olly is banned from seeing Maddy he covers her favorite room with two glass walls with photos of a variety of different oceans and beaches. The place she deserved to be able to go to. In the movie, Olly has no roof hideout. The roof was how Olly got away from his abusive father. In the movie, Olly Father isn't featured as much as he is in the book which could be seen positively. He was a drunk with many problems that affected Olly mother and Sister along with him. Mr. Waterman was in the book and an unnecessary character. He was one of Maddy
