Once his fish died he believed that he lost everything that was important to him and then tried to kill himself using a shard of glass from his broken fish bowl. Photo 3 best shows Mark being hopeless. When mark loses something as simple as a fish, he becomes very depressed and attempts to commit suicide. While he did not attempt it by drowning himself, the comparison of hand drowning to him committing can be made, both representing a death in vain.
Even though Mark is emotionally attached to a few things, he is a rather independent person. Some people describe green type personalities as “lone wolves” and the same could be said for Mark. This can be seen when he is nearing the end of his stay at Short Term 12. The line staffers want to reward him for his outstanding citizenship and behavior while at Short Term 12. He quickly refuses by stating, “I don't need nothing from you guys” (Cretton 28). Even though he did accept a reward later on, his first initial reaction was to refuse. This shows that he is inherently independent and does not like receiving any handouts from other people. The color and position of the hand in Photo 3 presents Mark’s independence very well. The color of the background is green showing off Mark’s green personality traits that make him more of an independent person. Also, the way the hand in being held up only by itself show the independence Mark feels as he goes through life. Nobody really helps Mark to much, so he has to be there for himself and hold himself up when no one else is
