In this essay I am going to be putting the governments of both Fables and Ex Machina side by side and analyzing whether they are democracies or something different. At first sight we can see the way Fabletown is ruled is far away from being a democracy at all, whereas the way New York City is governed in Ex Machina has a lot more to do with the present day general idea of how a democracy should be.
The world of Fables: Adventures In Exile presents the reader with a political system that is nowhere near the realm of a proper democracy, if it is a democracy at all. There is a highest authority, namely King Cole, the mayor of Fabletown but in reality it is Snow White, who’s just a deputy, says herself she “does the real job of running” (17) the Fabletown community. So in essence, King Cole is there just for public appearances and formalities but it is Snow White who exercises the real power backstage.
