1.Name two concerns stated in the article which different faith groups have about agricultural biotechnology.
Ans:
Few religious groups like Catholics and Muslims have some problems with modifying the original genome structure of specific organism. These two religions feel using biotechnology and altering the genome is modifying the God’s creation and it is considered as “playing with god”. Muslims also have problem that they can’t eat anything that contains anything from Pig.
They have some issues like they can eat meat only which is Halal (permissible from the sharia perspective) and Tayyib (good quality) which these genetically modified foods not satisfying.
2.How do you feel about using biotechnology to alter the production, processing and distribution of food?
Ans.
Biotechnology is the answer for many problems and limitations of food production, processing and distribution (transportation of food). I strongly support use of biotechnology in the food production.
Production of food using GMOs (genetically modified organisms like bacillus.thuringiensis) will reduce the cost of production (by making pest resistant) and it also helps to save the environment when we use biological organisms instead of pesticides. We can also use genetically modified strains and foods to get much good quality foods.
Using biotechnology in processing like checking for the safety of food and to detect the presence of microorganisms is strongly recommended. Biotechnology can be used to increase the self-life of food materials and decrease the rate of spoilage. Using biotechnology for the packaging is also an important use.
Using biotechnology for distribution or transportation is the best use we can do to food
