Lucid dreaming, in simple terms, is the ability to become aware that you are dreaming. Lucid dreaming in the past has been seen as a mysterious talent. However, experiments have shown that is actually a learnable skill and that it can be enhanced and trained. (LaBerge: Lucid dreaming as a learnable skill: Perceptual and Motor Skills, 51, 1039-1042.) You can increase your capacity for lucid dreaming and cause yourself to experience it more often. Studies have also shown that you can gain control of your dreams and even influence the outcome.…

I have woken up and reflected on my dreams as either horrible or awesome and maybe sometimes a little weird. I haven’t thought much about dreams outside of that. I have recently been informed of a dream called a Lucid Dream. A Lucid dream is a dream in which you have the “ability to consciously observe and/or control your dreams.” In other words, you know in your dream that you are dreaming. If you want to run through fire and know it won’t hurt, go ahead. “Favorite activities of lucid dreamers include flying, meeting people they’d never meet in real life, solving problems, practicing skills, gaining creative inspiration, talking to their subconscious through lifelike ‘dream people’ and exploring/warping their dream landscape.(FAQ)”…

The definition of a dream is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep. It is believed that dreams have always existed in human society and have been shared among members of societies dating back to 3000-4000 BC. In various societies dreams held a number of meanings and significance. Throughout history dreams have been recognized as significant symbols or signs, warnings of the future, connections between living and the dead, capable of diagnosing illness and predicting onset of diseases, temptations of the devil, and numerous other possible things. Dream interpretations, or attempts made to understand a person’s dream, date back to 3000-4000 B.C., where they were documented on clay tablets. For as long as man has been able to talk about dreams, humans have been fascinated with them and have strived to understand them, though this is challenging because dreams are often so easily forgotten. Throughout the history of the study of dreams, famous theorists have presented their own dream philosophies and theories, developed eight specific categories of dream types, and presented many dreams found commonly among people which represent common aspects of life, all of these things have been developed in trying to answer one question: Do dreams reflect, or relate to, a person’s sub-conscious state of mind?…

What is a dream? Some dictionaries say, “A series of thoughts, images, and emotions that occur during sleep” (Webster’s). Other references say dreams are “a communication of body, mind, and spirit in a symbolic communicative environmental state of being” (Lukeman 61). Dreams have both a metaphysical and physical existence. The metaphysical aspect is the imagery in a dream and its relation to the subconscious. The physical aspect is the chemical reactions that occur within the brain during dreams. There are many commonly asked questions about dreams. Some can be answered scientifically, but the majority cannot. You might unsuccessfully try to scientifically answer questions like: What are our dreams trying to tell us? Why are dreams so strange with frequent shifts of scene? “When we sleep we do more than just rest our weary bones; we tap into our subconscious mind” (Ullman and Zimmerman). Many people simply look at dreams at a literal level. They view dreaming as just another one of those peculiar, uncontrollable happenings within our brain. However, this is not the case. The fact is everybody dreams, whether they remember their dreams or not. These dreams, which are very difficult to influence or manipulate, are the language of our subconscious mind.…

First off, in the simplest terms, lucid dreaming is when a sleeping person becomes aware of the fact that they are dreaming. In the normal adult there are two main stages of sleep that alternate at about 90-minute intervals. Those stages are the REM and nonREM sleep. Rapid eye movement or (REM) sleep can be roughly described as a period when the brain is active but the body is paralyzed. Note that you can only dream during a REM cycle of sleep. In non-rapid eye movement or (nonREM) sleep, the brain is less active but the body can move. Non-REM sleep is composed of four stages. Your brain goes through each stage of sleep in a continuous cycle throughout the night, but as this alternating pattern continues, the nonREM stages are less apparent and the periods of REM sleep grow longer (Levitan 2014). At about the six hour mark you will reach your longest phase of the REM cycle where lucid dreaming is easiest.…
