At the beginning of Macbeth, the three witches plant the idea of Macbeth becoming King in his head. We do not know if what the witches tell Macbeth and Banquo are prophecies or fate. Becoming King is Macbeth’s ultimate success and once the first two prophecies become a reality he starts thinking of ways for the third prophecy to come true. Sinful Macduff, They were all struck for thee!” (IV.iii 203). Macduff controls his ambition that makes him able to offer mercy to Macbeth. “Then yield thee coward, And live to be the show and gaze o’ the time:” (V.viii 2). Macbeth does not want mercy; he would rather die than be seen as a bad person. Macduff kills Macbeth not out of vengeance but for the good of the country.
