named Mrs. Dubose, who was always very nasty with Jem and Scout. They always thought she was mean because she portrayed herself a such a heartless woman. In reality she was just sick and because of her morphine addiction she had intense mood swings, which is why she was so unpleasant at times.‘“She was sick for a long time. Son, didn’t you know what her fits were?”’ (Lee 148). When Atticus told Jem that the reason she acted the way she did, he was very surprised to find out the truth. ‘“You know, she was a great lady.’’’(Lee 149). Atticus explains to Jem that Mrs.Dubose was very courageous. That was hard for Jem to believe because he only got to know her as a rude person. He understood Mrs. Dubose now. He no longer thought the same about her.
Much lies beneath what you only hear. In To Kill a Mockingbird there is a character known as Boo Radley who is seen as a monster of a man, he supposedly never comes out to see the light of day and is only active at night. The kids are frightened by Boo but are also quite interested in his lifestyle. Why did hide himself away and for all this time? Messing around with him one night, Jem and Dill thought it would be a good idea to try and get Boo to come out. ‘“You all’ve gone crazy, he’ll kill us!’’’(Lee 63). The kids thought he was insane. What the kids didn’t know was that Boo was actually always watching Jem and Scout, looking out for them. Boo Radley was very lonely and longed for a relationship with the kids. Later on in the novel Jem and Scout come into conflict with Mr. Bob Ewell when he attacks them. Boo comes to their rescue and recreates a new image for himself. Scout was starting to understand Boo and that he wasn’t insane but just lonely. ‘“Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough.’’ (Lee 374) Scout and Boo had created a bond by the end of the novel.
Appearance vs. Reality is important because it’s a way to fully understand the truth behind what is only seen but actually fully known. You’re able to dig a little deeper into what is really going on. Like Boo Radley and the truth of who he really is behind closed doors. And Mrs.Dubose and why she always presented herself to Jem and Scout as a nasty lady. That’s why appearance vs. reality is important, to dig deeper and find the truth, to not justify your knowledge on appearance but on the fact behind it.
