Examples Of Aristotle's Golden Mean
Aristotle’s Golden Mean is a strong example of how one should live a balanced life. The golden mean is finding a middle ground between two extremes. These extremes range between being deficient and being too excessive. Aristotle said that it is moral to be between them and due to it being moral, it is how one should live. In class, the example of courage was explained. When one has too much courage, they are considered to be rash, which has many negatives. Someone who is rash will commonly ignore consequences and do things that could put themselves or others at risk. On the opposite end, is being cowardice. One who is a coward will miss out on many things in life due to fear. Considering this example, it made clear that being in between the extremes and being courageous is the best way to live. The TV show, Shameless, shows the how living at an extreme and not at the golden mean can prove detrimental. Shameless follows a poverty-stricken family in Chicago with an alcoholic father, a mother who left them, and the children left to raise themselves. The episode “Father Frank Full of Grace,” has prime examples of living by extremes versus at the golden mean. In the episode, the eldest daughter who raises the other five children, does whatever she can to protect them. Through this, she shows her balance between being over protective and careless. While she does let the other children have freedom, if they ever get into trouble, she does whatever possible to try and help them, while they learn from their mistakes. This middle ground is commonplace in raising children and it is important that the eldest daughter raises them in this way. On the complete contrary, is the alcoholic father of the children in the show. In this episode, he is found passed out, drunk with vomit frozen to his face. He had made the decision to choose alcohol over his children in this
