Wendell Berry The Pleasure Of Eating Summary
For my first article I chose the Wendell Berry “The Pleasure of Eating”. When Barry says “eating is an agricultural act...Most eaters...are no longer aware that this is true. They think of food as an agricultural product, perhaps, but they do not think of themselves as participants in agriculture. They think of themselves as "consumers."” I agree. Until I read the article, I thought the same way. Even though I knew that, me buy the food I do, it funds the farmers, I never thought about how I was enabling the production methods also. I knew from AP Environmental Science about how most farmers nowadays cover everything in chemicals and drain the soil of nutrients by producing the same crops on the same land until all the nutrients are gone, but I never thought about how I was allowing this process to continue. I would like to buy only products that are organically and sustainably grown, I don’t have the money to afford that. This …show more content…
For some people, they don’t even know how our food is really produced. Whereas others can’t afford to make the better choice or don’t have access to organic food. Because of this, some people don’t have a choice. They’re forced to get what they can afford and have access to, and that is the chemical crops. Even if people could afford the organic whole foods, supermarkets are designed to make them purchase processed junk food. Michael Pollan talks about how supermarkets are set up to catch your eye on the junk food as you walk to get your, what he calls, “whole foods”. The “whole foods” are the unprocessed meat, milk, vegetables, and fruits on the perimeter of the store. The goal of the grocery store is to make you walk past all the other, most profitable, junk foods. Anyone who has been in a grocery store and hears this will agree. So even if you have the money to buy organic and whole foods, then you could still be pulled in by the processed
