Looking at that ragged-edged piece of paper on the desk made my heart skip a beat and it moved me into a state of confusion. The palpitations in my chest pained me and the pit of my stomach began to knot. Reading these hurtful messages through the eyes of a little girl rendered a heartbreaking experience. “Sarah is ugly,” “Julie has big teeth,” and “Angelique is black.” I am Angelique, and to them, my black face represented my entire essence. For the first time in my life, I felt deflated and betrayed by my skin color. The girls who wrote the note endured expulsion and embarrassment from being sent home.
