Contradiction and Counter hegemony are essential to the understanding of DOC. In recognizing contradiction within a society, marginalized groups form counter hegemonic movements to resist the Master Narrative in which our society has been written upon-- that white is the dominant race and minority groups are the “other”. Both of these concepts are driven by ideologies such as white supremacy and capitalism. These keywords provide us a foundation to critically analyze the black and white history that we have been taught in high school. Counter hegemony, defined as ideas that challenge the current dominant ideologies, provides insight on the cultural beauty present within marginalized groups that the Master Narrative obscures from society, with the mission to dismantle hegemony. In addition, I was more able to show how each keyword works together to evolve over time. For example, seeing contradiction through America’s manifest destiny gave me historical context and applying it years later on Lumumba Zapata College Plan demonstrates the ongoing clashing of ideologies that in turn, results in counterhegeony, which facilitates social mobility and change. DOC has helped me realize that history is not a black and white as it is in a textbook. In fact, history works in a cyclical fashion that repeats and revolves. Many historical moments work in parallel and are layered upon each other to create complex interactions between social groups and cultures.
