Examples Of Discrimination In The Book Thief

Why is discrimination such a large and ongoing problem in our society? All over the world people are discriminated against simply because of their colour, religion, the way they talk or even what they eat. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak discrimination is shown by the way Jews were treated during the war. Because Hitler told the people of Germany that Jews were scum and were the equivalent of rats. The Jews were discriminated against so greatly that they were forced to close their stores and loose there jobs. They slowly ran out of food and life became very hard for them. But Germany wasn’t the only place that discrimination occurred, it has occurred in all the countries around the world. There will always be discrimination, it may be as small as calling someone a name or it may be as big as taking someone’s life.

Black people in South Africa are not aloud on park benches, they have separate schools, areas to live and different places to sit on busses. Discrimination in that particular time era was greatly apposed by the rest of the world and international protest began putting growing pressure on the government to end the apartheid. On the build up to the killing of the Jews in Germany the Jewish people had been subject to apartheid laws and people were encouraged to discriminate against the Jewish people to make their lives harder. The Jews were given separate living quarters of the town, mixed marriages were made illegal and they were deprived of there citizenship.
