The first reason the community in The Giver is a dystopia is because of sameness. Sameness makes everything the same. It talks about not having color, “when flesh was many different colors.That was before we went to sameness”. Meaning , their community wasn’t always in sameness. They have no memory of no sameness though. Flesh used to be different colors before sameness, now everyone's flesh is the same color. Sameness is truly a distraction to what’s really going on in the community!

This goes back to not being able to see memories because they have no memories of love. So, they can’t choose their own spouse. If someone doesn’t live up to the expectations of the community then they get released. At the beginning of the book, a pilot was released for accidentally wandering in their community “needless to say, he will be released” the intercom said. Released means: if you do something wrong, they’ll take you somewhere and they’ll put a shot/needle through your forehead. No one in the community sees that as a bad thing. They really don’t know what they're doing or what it means. Sameness, lack of knowledge, and complete control are all reasons the community in The Giver is a dystopia.
