I was walked to the classroom by Ms. Greene, the assistant principal. As I walked into class I was welcomed by all the students screaming “MISS S” which were followed by a barrage of warm hugs. As Ms. Greene was walking out of the classroom she commented, “They’ve missed you. Pickholtz. She believes that every child can learn if they want to. They just have to be given the right resources and support. She also believes a hands on approach is best for students. Which I also believe is best for every child. Children can learn, but they need the motivation. They need teachers that are dedicated and open-minded. Teachers have to be confident with themselves and be willing to change according to what is needed for their students. Compassion is important.
I believe Ms. Pickholtz is a progressivist. Like myself, Ms. Pickholtz believes that if most of the children in a classroom are off-task, it’s not the children that are the problem but it’s the task itself. Students should be able to express their individuality. Lessons should be taught to provoke curiosity. They should be given opportunities to develop social qualities such as cooperation.
