Many of the leadership skills shown in Beowulf are still used today, but they are not taken as seriously. The two major skills that are not taken to heart as much are keeping your promises and swallowing your pride. Two of the skills that are still taken into effect are focusing on making your country more successful and your willingness to stand for what is right. In today’s world politicians are the closest beings a country has to a king. They are responsible for many major decisions and actions. When considering a politician we look for their traits. Some good, some bad. Back in Beowulf’s time a major characteristic for a good leader was to keep their promises (Post, Tom). In today's day and age that is not as important. In the last presidential
debate Donald Trump was speaking about Hillary Clinton’s involvement with blacks and Latinos. He said “All she’s done is talk to the African-Americans and to the Latinos, but they get the vote and then they come back, they say ‘see you in four years.’” (Staff, Politico). Trump implied to the fact that Clinton, and many other politicians, make promises to many people but they never carry through until the next election. They only bring it up then so they can get as many votes as possible. Politicians will do anything to confirm their place in office. In Hrothgar's sermon, in Beowulf, he mentions that a good trait of a leader is swallowing their pride. Donald Trump boasted in the first presidential debate about his temperament. He said “I think my strongest asset, maybe by far, is my temperament. I have a winning temperament”(Morrow, Brenden). Everyone could tell that he was not swallowing his pride in that moment. Anytime Donald Trump speaks he goes nuts. One he is boasting; two he is lying. Both of those are not traits of a good leader. Not every skill from Beowulf’s time has been forgotten. Two examples are, having the willingness to stand for what is right and having the motivation to change . An article from the Journal of Leadership Education titled “ Beowulf and the Teaching of Leadership” said a leadership trait that Beowulf had was having a “greater desire to change the status quo.” That is still a major characteristic of today. Even though every politician has a different stance on morals; they stand up for themselves and they really push for their ideologies to be accepted. They have the desire to change everyday life to what they believe is right. That ties into the other trait that is still evident today: having the willingness to stand for what is right. In Beowulf, Beowulf stood up for what was right by fighting off the monsters. He knew he needed to save the people and the country even though he was from somewhere else. In today’s world leaders do not stray from what they believe is just. They do not give into the pressures of anyone else. Even though their opinions may differ from others, they stick to their beliefs and fight to fix controversial issues.
For the rest of time there will always be some sort of leadership position to be held. Whether it be political, business, or even parental, the leadership instinct will be in us all. The person that expresses those skills in the best ways will become the individual that everyone respects and looks up to.
