Throughout our lives, we have read about many amazing people who led others, whether to victory or defeat. In the year so far, we have read several short stories based on the idea of leadership. We were introduced to several influential characters and what they did that showed leadership. Each one of these people showed a different aspect of a good leader, from decision making to bravery. To be a good leader, you have to have a few characteristics. First, you must have a strong relationship with whom you are leading, wether it be one man or an army. Sometimes, however, we give someone this spotlight in our lives because they have already helped us so much, and thus deserve it. This is what happened between Elroy and Tim. Their time together was so very meaningful to Tim, that he issues gratitude towards the man years later! This is seen when Tim describes their first interactions together on the night they met. Tim says that, “The man who opened the door that day is the hero of my life.” (O’Brien 178). This statement is powerful. We all meet a lot of people in our lives, and we all may have one person that stuck out above the rest. Elroy became that person to Tim. He helped Tim from the moment they met by taking him in, and giving him food and shelter. He also taught Tim life lessons through simple tasks. When Tim helped Elroy with odd jobs on the property, he knew that he was just doing something good for someone else, without any cause otherwise. When the two went fishing, Tim learned to appreciate the little parts of life, like the people and they time they get to spend together. These life lessons helped Tim decide to go to war. He knew that by going ahead with it, he would be doing good for others, just like he accomplished with Elroy. He also knew that he was fighting for other people’s families.Through all of this, Elroy earned a place of influence in Tim’s life that he had not had
