Examples Of Microaggression
I saw a microaggression at a San Diego Charger and Raider Game. A Hispanic gentlemen instigated the microaggession. The target of the microaggression was a heterosexual African-American couple. Both were standing during a play in the second quarter and the Hispanic gentlemen shouted " y'all niggas sit down ". The first remark was ignored by the African -American couple, however, a few moments later the Hispanic gentlemen repeated the remark.

The African-American gentlemen turned to the Hispanic gentlemen and told him the remarks were unnecessary, rude and inappropriate. Immediately the Hispanic gentlemen started cursing and threatening the African-American gentlemen, in addition, the Hispanic gentlemen approached the African-American gentlemen and a physical altercation ensued. Eventually the altercation was halted by the stadium police and both were subsequently removed from the stadium.

The article “Label Us Angry” written by Jeremiah Torres describes the personal experience that changed his perspective on the world that surrounds him. Jeremiah and Carlos grew up together in Palo Alto, as adolescents their race went from being overlooked to recognized. This specific night they were going out to celebrate Carlos’ seventeenth birthday. Jeremiah “pulled out of the Safeway driveway as a speeding driver delivered a jolting honk.” The two cars “lined up at a spotlight” it was a young white man dressed in a polo shirt and slacks driving a BMW. The white man said, “he wasn’t honking at you, you stupid fuck!” Jeremiah gave him a middle finger while the white man pulled out a can of mace spraying them proceeding to say, “Take that you fucking lowlifes! Stupid chinks!” As their eyes burned no one stopped to help,…

Diane Cole believes when dealing with racial slurs or offensive ethnic jokes , it is best to speak up. Miss Cole shows us this in her essay called "Don't Just Stand There". Miss Cole believes it is best to do it in a private and calm atmosphere. Even though lashing out and responding with anger is most people's initial reaction. Lashing out is normally ineffective and does not solve the problem according to Miss Cole. Another thing Miss Cole believes is effective is making sure you heard what the person said correctly and correctly understood their intent behind those words. This let's you give the person the benefit of the doubt incase you did not hear them correctly. If these slurs or jokes happen in a work environment Miss Cole believes…

Complainant reasserts her allegations. Complainant acknowledges that Martinez did not actually say a racial slur; however Complainant states that Martinez’s behavior (shaking his finger and interrupting her) are kinds of behaviors that people use against African-American to discredit and to belittle them. Complainant cites that Martinez’s behavior are “racial microaggressions” which are brief and everyday slights, insults, indignities and denigrating messages sent to people of color.…

I believe that microaggression is something that has created a victimhood culture. I believe this because all though Microaggression is unintentional discrimination it is still discrimination, and any discrimination amongst individuals is wrong. Discrimination is discrimination and it is wrong no matter what way you put it. I also believe that it is human nature to make mistakes. Everyone is human and not everyone knows that what they are about to say may hurt someone else, so it is good to have that maturity to recognize a mistake and correct it, because there are a lot of different races genders and people in the world and someone who lives a different life style then someone else may not understand what they say can hurt that other person.…

    Zoot Suit Riots

Mexican-Americans were highly offended when American citizens, mostly the marines and soldiers, attacked any Mexican they saw on the street wearing a zoot suit. Some of the time these Mexicans were not part of a gang, but were attacked as revenge from that August night in 1942. Police officials were watching servicemen beat the Mexicans on the street then arresting the victims, saying that they provoked the riot (La Opinion 190). After seeing that police were not taking the proper measures to fully stop these beatings, the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles said that the Embassy was awaiting orders from the Mexican government and it was possible that there would be a formal protest to the United States government (New York Times 191). Obviously, to the Mexican race, these riots and beatings are extremely unfair and are taking measures to stop them.…

In this event, the narrator and several of his classmates must fight blindfolded until only one person remains standing. While the drunken crowd of respected bankers, lawyers, judges, doctors, and even a pastor finds this to be great entertainment, to the participants it is quite humiliating and degrading. Eventually the narrator and one other man are left alone in the ring. The narrator offers to let the other man win, but the request is refused. Therefore, the two continue to fight until the narrator eventually loses. The fact that grown, respected man can watch and be entertained by this barbaric behavior. I believe that these young men were placed on display for these influential white men. These young men were used to amuse them for one night. It is as if these influential white men were watching two chickens go at it or two dogs fighting. Those young men may have been black but they were still men, human. How can we as a society accept or condom this type of behavior? Who draws the line? I suppose at that time these influential men did and that is why to this day we as a society are fighting to regress from our past and to remember as President Lincoln stated "Men are created equal . . .…

Many of the micro aggressions that I have experienced have manifested from racism that were specifically directed towards my “perceived” Mexican or immigrant identity. Many people wrongly assumed that I am Mexican because of the color of my skin and physical characteristics. They categorize me into a one dimensional identity without taking into account my other ethnic and national identities, which are Salvadorian and American. Some micro aggressions I have experienced include comments about speaking English so well for a “Mexican” or how I should not speak Spanish since we live in America. Often times I also get insulting comments on my perceived citizenship status, such as being called a “wetback” or being told to go back to Mexico. I receive…

From the couch been prohibited to coach the team to actual physical and verbal aggression. They as a whole team tried to stay mentally strong. This method helped out and they were able to continue with the games and not let them be disturbed. A big part of this was because of who they were and that they didn't belong where they were. Lots of the discrimination was made to the racial profiling because they “didn’t belong there” because of who they were. Many of the players were really far from home to be able to get this help. Both the coach and the team were in completely foreign places and that was what they were received…

The United States of America is unlike any other country in the entire world, representing nearly 200 nationalities within its citizens. Naturally, due to these statistics, everyday people from different ethnic backgrounds are forced to interact with each other and exchange differing social and cultural norms. In this process, it seems to frequently happen that those of one race treat those of another in a poor manner, whether it is a subtle action or a profound one. From a personal standpoint, I work in a restaurant where many different people of every race come to eat on a daily basis. A restaurant is somewhere that it is possible to observe many cruel interactions between two different races. Certain races are associated with certain tipping behaviors, which therefore form schemas in the minds of servers. Ultimately, these ideas cause them to unfortunately act accordingly due to the preexisting idea they have about a certain race.…

I have been in a racist incident that I was personally involved in. It was 2008 and I was traveling to Miami Florida from my hometown Columbus Ohio. Midway through my trip between flight connections I was in Greer South Carolina for about an hour and a half. I decided to go to one of the local bars in the airport; I choose the nearest one to me and order a beer and chips. It was a middle aged white male that took my order; he poured my beer and brought it to me then proceeded to ask for my ID. I show him my ID and I could immediately see his facial expression change from welcoming to hostile, he throws my…

The idea of racial microaggressions has been around since the 1970s, you may not know any extremists, you think “I don’t hate black people, so I’m not racist”, but you benefit from discrimination. There are certain privileges and opportunities you have that you do not even realize since you have not been deprived in certain ways. Racial microaggressions are a type of perceived racism. They are more subtle and ambiguous than the more hostile or explicit expressions of racism, such as racial discrimination (Rainey Lecture 2015). Microaggressions are everyday verbal, visual, or environmental hostilities, slights, insults, and invalidations or mistreatment that occurs due to an individual’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and so on.
