Observation
I choose to observe a 1st grade class co-teaching situation in which the ESOL specialist pushes in and work will all the students in a group lesson then individually with the more at-risk- ESOL students. During this lesson the ESOL teacher was the predominate teacher teaching the students the lesson on sight words and vocabulary words in a story that they were reading. The general education sat in proximity of the students however she mainly observed and manage the class’s behavior. The ESOL teacher during the group lesson taught the student with the mart board calling on student to read out the sight words and vocabulary words. Then she directed the students to form a circle and pass out stories. During this time the general education

While during each day she is in the classroom co-teaching for an hour and a half. She helped to support the general education student by not only teaching student the vocabulary and collaboration, but she also provides support through providing materials to other lesson that she believes would benefit other students. During independent work she provide special services to the students that are at risk ESOL students. The students seem to understand this and are not confused as to why the teacher is working with those students. This mean that student are comfortable and this process is a regular routine for the student. As far as the classroom management of this team the ESOL teacher adopts the classroom management that is already in place in the classroom, she makes sure during the lesson she is teaching that the classroom is running properly for learning. This notion was supported through the observation in which she had reminded student of the classroom expectations. Most of the communication due to her busy schedule since she pushes into multiple classrooms happens through email, this allows for reference and documentation for her records. Her rational for the co-teaching situation is that the ESOL students receive services without having to be pulled out of the classroom. Over the summer we met face to face to talk about how the classroom should be run and the expectations hat would be in my classroom. We then laid out a calendar of lesson and denoted which on of us would lead this lesson. We agreed that the other teacher would support the lead teacher for that lesson and control the classroom behavior. We both agreed that instead of pulling student for small groups we would keep the students in the classroom and would operate the independent work when the ESOL teacher was in the classroom like

    I must say, according to my observation in the scenario I really see two strategies that is being used to help the E.L.Ls. The strategies was used on Maria that just arrived in the class but has been there for only five months. What I observed was that the teacher has a student helping her and is making sure she is involved in all activities. This will help her build her social development skills. But the downfall is that her speech will not improve since the teacher is really not doing much to help her with her speech. But on a good note he is considering on getting her tested for her speech to make sure she does not have a disability. My second observation was from his E.L.L student, Mikhail. I really don’t see that he is using any strategy to help him when it comes down to his social skills. This might be because He has been in the states a lot longer. This is an advantage he has on Maria when it comes to social development skills.     The student is five years old. The student is in kindergarten. The kindergarten class has fourteen children. The classroom is a mainstreamed and both teachers have special education experience. The student has strengths in reading comprehension, phonics, and spelling. He enjoys puzzles and can complete a fifty piece puzzle on his own. The student focuses on the end pieces of the puzzle first. The puzzle is a picture of the United States and the students reads all the states and their capitals. When the student completes the puzzles he recites the cities that are listed. His weaknesses are in physical activities that involve group participation. The student repeats questions when he is asked. The student repeats what he hears throughout the day so he will often say hello, how are you? The student has an IEP and a goal for the student is to promote conversations with peers, family members, and teachers. The IEP states that the student works with a therapist for speech. The speech therapist states that the student uses echolalia which is repetitive use of language. The student can read age appropriate books for eight year olds. The student read the book, Stegosaurus The Dinosaur with the Smallest Brain, by Elizabeth J. Sandell. The student pronounced every word correctly. Another saying he often repeats out loud often are, come on lets wash your hands. When the student says that, he does not go wash his hands. In fact the teachers have to aid in hand washing with the student because he seems to avoid soap when not supervised. The student was…

    Based on the fact that 20.6% of the district population are in the ELL program, an instructional strategy I would use in the classroom is using small groups and model desired skills and outcomes.
