Overcoming Obstacles
"One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles, possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity". To me, this means that the only way to conquer a personal loss is by overcoming obstacles in order to gain strength. The death of my grandpa was the biggest obstacle I have had to endure so far in my life. He passed away in the hospital from Lung cancer. My grandpa and grandma lived with my family. Hence, he was really close to me. Overcoming his death took a lot of courage. I managed to overcome the pain due to my understanding, support from my family and my memories.
It was a warm July evening. My dad was at work and my brother and sister were at a friend's place. My mom got a call from my dad saying that my grandpa didn't have much time left in this world. Even before my mom had told me the truth, I knew. A couple of minutes before we arrived at hospital, my grandpa had passed away. I knew that I would have to get through this day one way or another. But the fact, I knew prepared me for this tragedy. My knowledge of the final outcome about my grandpa's death, gave me a chance to spend as much time possible with him. Moreover, I know I did my best to save him. My grandpa quit smoking three years before his death. This is because my family and I constantly …show more content…
nagged him to stop smoking, and so he did. Unfortunately, smoking still came back to haunt him even three years after he quit. "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding." This means that only where there is pain is there understanding. I now have no regrets because I understand that I tried my best to save him. Knowledge was the mental aspect of overcoming my grandpa's death.
Overcoming my grandpa's death would not have happened without the physical support from my family. My family helped me overcome the pain of losing my grandpa. They provided me with comfort, love and a shoulder to cry on. Out of all my family members, my mom was the tower of strength. It's because of my mom that I overcame the death of my grandpa. She showed me strength by not mourning in front of me. I know that when my mom was alone she did mourn. Following my mom's strength, I began to take the final steps of overcoming my grandpa's death. Throughout the ordeal of this incident, I learned that "What does not destroy me, makes me stronger."
When I was little, my grandpa used to tell me stories at night.
He would tell fairytales, folktales and religious stories. I remember the time my grandpa took me to Wonderland when I was 9 years old. Wonderland is a theme park in Ontario. It has rides for people of all ages. My grandpa and I sat on a mini roller which had to go through a dark tunnel decorated with skeletons. Every time we went through that tunnel we laughed. Thinking back on all the good memories I share with him, I think that this was the main reason why I overcame his death. These memories help me picture him. Even though he has passed away, he will always exist in my
memories.
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear." To me, this means that courage only exists when someone is more important to you than fear. For me, courage didn't come so fast. It started to sink in because of my knowledge, support from my family and my memories. Although the pain of my grandpa's death will always be with me, I am ready to get on with life.
