Nationalism is the want to better one's’ country. Europeans thought that expanding to Africa would better their home country. English author, John Ruskin wrote of the reasons of nationalism, “Must either do or perish: She must found colonies as fast and as fart as she is able” (Ruskin). This text shows the drive to conquer new nations in the name of their home country. Africa was seen as a new opportunity for Europeans.
After the start of the industrial revolution Europe needed resources to keep up with the mass production, this was one of the reasons europeans so desperately wanted land in Africa. African land was rich in resources, such as ivory, coal, rubber, gold, lead, and diamonds. All of these raw materials were valuable to europeans, they indulged in the African riches and unmineralized people of Africa. One of the regions britain had was full of any materials these lead to many advancements such as, “Coins, metal alloys, electric wiring, rust protection, and ammunition flue” ( Document D). The resources in africa made europeas have a sudden interest this on other occasions was often overlooked.
