Examples Of Stereotypes
Stereotypes are categories about people based on membership in a group. Those categories may consist of ethnic or cultural groups, social and gender groups. Stereotype is based on the beliefs about the specific characteristics to all members of that group (Canary, Cody & Manusov, 2008 p 139). Sometimes stereotypes lead people to prejudice negatively by the beliefs that come with the stereotype damaging our ability to communicate with others. One way to let go stereotype to some degree is when people have the chance to interact with members from another group or culture (Canary, Cody & Manusov, 2008 p 141).

The example of stereotype that I chose is the role of Latinas in Hollywood. Latin women often play the role of maid, housekeepers, nannies or immigrants characters. Lupe Ontiveros, Jenifer Lopez and Eva Longoria are some of the Latin actresses playing those roles. The Latin actress Lupe Ontiveros is a clear example of this stereotype. Lupe has played the role of maid more that 150 times in films and on stage. One of her most important participations were her roles of maid in the 80’s classic film The Goonies, 1997 American romantic comedy As Good as It Gets, and NBC sitcoms like "Veronica's Closet". In addition, Jennifer Lopez and her role in Maid in Manhattan continued with the stereotype through the years.

What image do you see when you hear the word homeless? I use to think of words like dirty, lonely, and also needy. The true definition of homeless is without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Stereotyping is a common thought through our human minds, which means oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. I learned this summer on my mission trip to Madison, Wisconsin, that homeless people are not what we think they are.…

Stereotypes are generalizations or assumptions that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what people in that group are like. What people think of others just because they look a certain way. There are stereotypes many kinds, about gender, age, and especially of races. A race stereotype of Americans is that they are generally considered to be friendly, generous, and tolerant, but also arrogant, impatient, racist and domineering. Asians, on the other hand, were expected to be and alert, intelligent, reserve and unsociable. Hispanics are consider to be from large families, dirty, not born in the US, unable to speak English, uneducated, eat too much beans and tacos, good dancers, and that they are gangsters who like to get tattoos and ride on low riders. After discussing this report with my parents, they remembered a time last year when I came home and complained about a group at school. I recall last year around June, when I passed a group of friends. All standing in a circle gossiping by the gym. There were five or six - three girls, and I think two or three guys. Easily, I could tell that two of the guys were in a relationship with two girls because they were holding hands. I was opening my locker a few feet away so I could easily eavesdrop without much suspicion. As I twisted the lock around to my combination, the lock opening with a click, and I heard them mention a name of someone I knew. One of the girls, who was holding…

Being Asian, I have experienced stereotypes that have been branded ‘positive’. Just like their negative counterparts, these positive stereotypes also confine people and strip them of their individuality. Negative stereotypes are acknowledged as harmful to people, yet positive stereotypes are considered flattering and are widely accepted even though they can also be as equally damaging. One of the most frequent ‘positive’ stereotypes is that all ‘Asians are smart.’ This stereotype can quickly turn into ‘Asians are smart only because they are Asian.’ With this, no matter how much effort, studying or time an Asian person puts in, when we achieve academic excellence, the success is not credited to the individual, but to us being Asian. Assuming…

Firstly, When it comes to work you might apply for a job but not get a response, this could be because of your age older or younger. A stereotype is when you are judged because of race, sex and age. An example of this happening to a younger person is a teenage girl applying for a job at a store and the employer dosen’t want to hire you because they find out you are young unlike there other employees who are older and the employer thinks that the younger teen girl won’t be able to handle job maybe based on past experiences or just their own personal opinions. An example of it happening to a older person is them getting a job at the same place. It isn’t because they can’t handle the job it is because instead of an older employer they are younger…
