Paul. Even before Tino went up to Erik and Arthur, he told them on page 204, “‘Forget it, Tino. They’re not worth it.’ Tino gave me the strongest look”. According to this sentence, Paul even tried encouraging Tino to just forget about them, not even thinking of what could occur next. To jump into Paul’s shoes for a moment, he does find many circumstances in which he was able to conceive, like when he had to work his way out of his IEP. But it’s difficult for him to imagine someone (one of his friends) taking the chance to at least stand up to Erik. Not one of Paul’s flashbacks brought up anyone doing anything about Erik being absurd, not even his own parents.
After Paul’s move out of Lake Windsor Middle, he never thought he would have to take a look back at them.
It was almost like he felt like he betrayed them. In spite of the fact that they were kind to him before, it wasn’t like they would respect him as much as they did earlier. It was a bad situation that would be too much for Paul to handle, so when Tangerine Middle had to go against Lake Windsor, he was nervous. Not only because they were good, but because Paul would feel ashamed by his old school. Although nobody said it was impossible for Lake Windsor players to still show admiration towards Paul. Despite the fact that they tied 2-2, on page 198, Gino says “‘It’s cool. I don’t mind. It’s only a game Mars’”. What this shows is that Gino has his no anger when he came across Paul, which means that he respected him with his actions when he moved to Tangerine Middle. It’s almost like it drives the reader to think that this could end up badly for Paul, but beating the unimaginable it was the other way around. To add on, on page 198 it says “Luis Gruz pounded me on the back and said ‘I didn’t know you were goalie! Great game! Great game”. If Paul didn’t have a great game, the number one reason would have been because the Lake Windsor soccer team would have scored on
Paul.
In closing, Tangerine wasn't a book that was just about a boy named Paul that moves from Houston to Tangerine. It was about how no matter what situations you come across there is always a way to beat the odds and make it possible. That doesn’t mean that Mike Costello is going to come rising up from heaven, it just means that many events that seem pointless to believe in are possible.
