The excruciating examination process in which thousands of pressured students who are not fully ready to take an exam, must prove what they have ‘learned’ to aggressive and rapacious examiners, only a minority being selected in the vast marine of shinning students who have just been unchained of the shackles of school work and deadlines? And the rest...? They are left to dry out in the harsh world, to be taunted for doing miserable on that one day, not being given another try. Exams deteriorate us and oppress our very lives making our everyday routine revising and reiterating for an exam that can determine our whole life. The 2 sided pages trap us into our failure, whilst the time ticks at its loudest, making us write nothing but a single letter on a line which finally concludes our end result. Of course if you are to do well, you are fine, but with the ever-changing ruthless mark scheme it’s very difficult to do just well. The pressure put on the fragile mind only gives the tormenter one choice under the stress leading to the examination. To give up! Even the polite and civilised students fall and loose complete confidence in them self’s, feeling like they ruined there only last chance to shine. NO! Examination stress is most effectively managed through good preparation. If you allocate your preparation time so that you also maintain a healthy lifestyle, then your stress levels should be minimal. Remember also to manage your personal expectations and those of others, such as parents, immediate family and significant others. Positive thinking will be a major bonus. If you believe that you will succeed, you generally will. If you go into an examination thinking it will be difficult and you won't be able to cope, again that will probably be the case. If in the course of the examination you feel yourself losing control and becoming excessively panicked, then stop, take some deep breaths, focus your eyes away from the paper and into the middle distance whilst your deep breathing gets you back into control, and begin again. If a particular question is making you panic, leave it - move on to the next one and come back if you have time left over at the end. This basic failure to prioritise your energy can become your undoing since the sense of panic can spiral out of control and lead to inertia or frantic activity, resulting in few positive outcomes. Tests make me very nervous and I find myself to do poorly even on multiple choice tests because I would over analyze everything in the question. Standardized tests made this fear of tests sky rocket for me and many other students. My worst subject in school is math, so of course on math tests I was anxious. We go to class every day, do every bit of our homework, study for hours and think we have a strong grip on our material, until the day of the test comes. As soon as you get in the room you suddenly begin to blank out, freeze up, zone out or feel so nervous that you can’t get yourself together to respond to those questions that you knew the answer to when you were studying. If any of you have ever experienced these symptoms you may have a case of test anxiety. Do you ever get scared or nervous before you take a test or exam? I never thought I had test anxiety until my third grade PSSA’s. There was so much in my head, and I didn't know how to handle everything all at once. I was extremely nervous and even had a hard time breathing while I took the test. I got sent to the nurse and had to do a breathing treatment. I'm glad my friends and family were there for me after the first day of the test. They helped me learn some coping mechanisms that I could use before and during the test because I was so young and extremely nervous. I just don't understand how a few exams can determine how your life will turn out. I don't understand how getting an A on exam will make you have a better future, ok, so you can memorize things, so you spent the last 2 years studying and studying until your eyes and brain hurt. Just because you can memorize things does not mean you are skillful. I could go into a woodwork class now study all the information about the tools and the wood and the instructions on how to build something, that doesn't mean that when I go to make something I’ll be amazing at it, it just means that I’ll be more knowledgeable about my bearings. I think that if you’re good at something your good at something and there should be more practical exams instead of written exams, because at the end of the day you could study until your eyes burn but you might be shockingly bad at practical work.…
