McDonald's faces lawsuit over Happy Meals
A watchdog group says giving away toys with Happy Meals contributes to childhood obesity and threatens to sue. McDonald's cites healthful menu choices.

June 23, 2010|By Sharon Bernstein, Los Angeles Times sharon.bernstein@latimes.com

Weeks after a Silicon Valley county became the first in the nation to ban toys from McDonald's Happy Meals and other food promotions aimed at children, a public health watchdog group called on the fast food giant to remove the playthings from all its meal packages.

Selling food with toys does not mean fooling people. Well, is there any law that forbids people from selling food with toys? That is how people do business; they just want to get more profits from selling food with toys. Fast food companies don’t force people to buy their products, it’s our own choice. If the toys are the reasons why kids keep buying the meals, why don’t just parents take their kids to toys stores and buy a toy there? We can’t say that fast food companies fooled kids. Well, maybe in some cases they do fool kids, like in the part where they put slogans on their meals that say: “Do you want to be a Big Kid ?” Kids don’t have any idea about fast foods. The first thing that comes to their minds is that they have to eat this foods to get big ,and kids will just keep eating this foods, while parents keep telling their kids to be strong and…

David Barboza’s article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat” states that “Now it’s Nickelodeon, movies, video games, the Internet and even marketing in schools.” So even as a parent you can’t make your kids stop watching TV or do anything about schools promoting fast food. Even if the parents send their kids with healthy foods they would still prefer to eat fast food like McDonald's or Pizza Hut. Exercising does help you stay healthy but watching TV or playing video games all day doesn’t necessarily make you gain weight because most people when playing video games become really focused on the game and forget to eat and keep on playing without wanting to get up and eat junk food. According to Barboza’s article “According to a survey by the C.D.C., about 20 percent of the nation’s schools now offer brand-name fast food.” So it would be very difficult for a parent to keep their child unexposed to the campaigns that these fast food industries are targeting at kids. In certain cases obese children exercise a lot yet they are still not able to lose weight. The parents can’t be to blame because just about everything is unhealthy except vegetables and even now there have been studies that processed meat can lead to cancer and even vegetables contain GMOs and other things. Even some…

(Wexler, 68) Even the companies themselves admit it, “We want people buy our product [.]” (Rotter). Children are main targets for fast food companies. Americas Obesity

The McDonald's Corporation wants to be everywhere that children are. The number of obese children has more than doubled since 1980. Many people blame the fast food industry for making the people of America fat. Most of the people in America blames the companies for selling their unhealthy food, advertising and promoting their food to young children, and creating super sized servings. Having said that, there are people who believe that it is the person's fault for being an unhealthy and obese person. Weintraub's article “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home”, argues that America shouldn't be blaming the fast food industry or the government, but instead the parents. Weintraub explains how it's the parent's responsibility for their own child's health and I agree with him.…
