Contexts that Motivate Learning Motivational learning can be broken into four contexts. Those contexts are: Practical, Personal, Experiential, and Idealistic. First, the practical context of learning would be learning something because you know in advance it will benefit you. Second, the personal context of learning would be learning something because you want to do it for yourself to accomplish an important goal. Third, the experiential context of learning would be learning something because of past experiences. Finally, the idealistic context of learning would be learning something because you want to explore ideas, theories and concepts to experience the discovery of something new. There are four main contexts that motivate people to learn and everyone has their own reasons.
Personal Context of Motivation I decided to return to school for personal reasons. Returning to school is something that I have thought of doing for a very long time. I guess you could just say that I have been very lazy and procrastinated for a long time. I tried to go to college right out of high school but it did not work out. I don’t think I was quite prepared to make that big step. I was headed down the wrong path and decided it was time to do something with my life. I knew it would help me to grow as a person. I now find myself in sort of the same situation. I’ve been a cashier for 18yr and now I work hard every day loading a Goodwill trailer to support my kids I know that without a collage education that most likely will not happen. I also want to be a positive influence to my children and show him how important education is. I want to be a good influence to my son and daughter but most of all I want to better myself as a person. Plus most of all I know in 4 to 5 yr. my fibromyalgia will not be getting any better. By that time my R.A. in my back will be getting bad, I still have 8 yrs. left to support my little girl. I know I can’t do it working on

Motivation describes how an individual behaves and the reason(s) why he or she behaves in that way. Many psychologists have developed theories and study the behaviors of individuals to determine the motivators that cause certain behaviors. An individual’s behavior is influenced by his or her needs and wants. “Theories of motivation are created to help us explain, predict, and influence behavior” (Stipek, 2006-2011). Psychologists believe that if they can determine why an individual behaves the way he or she does, there is a possibility to change and influence his or her behavior. As one theory is developed, it is also modified later and sometimes dispute. The Motivation Concepts Table (Table 1) shows both grand theories and mini-theories.…

When I was in high school I wasn't a very good student. I really didn't apply myself to anything. I had no dreams of going to college or doing anything special with my life. No one had ever encouraged me to do any better than I was or to try harder. My parents were not college graduates, they both had full time jobs plus nine kids to raise. I knew that there wasn't any money to send me to college, and my guidance counselor never explained to me about financial aid. I graduated, got a job and worked one dead end job after another until I got married and started a family. I spent the next fifteen years raising my daughter and encouraging her education. About a year ago my husband decided he wanted a divorce and I was left wondering; “What am I going to do now?” Since graduation I have regretted not going to college, I have always wanted to work with children, either as a counselor or in social work. My parents suggested that maybe I look into going back to school. I applied at Southern New Hampshire University and I was admitted. My first reaction was that I'm going to fail, I started by taking two classes every eight weeks and to my surprise I didn't fail and I loved it. I had to take some time off to finalize the divorce and when I was mentally ready I applied to Ashford. I started last year thinking that I was going to fail and realized that if I try hard enough I can achieve my goals. I'm not scared of failing anymore, I am however afraid of letting myself down for not trying hard enough, and for me that isn't good enough anymore. I want better for myself and I want to look in the mirror everyday and be proud of who I see.…

I know I am not the only person that has had a hard time getting into school, or understanding how. Now that I’m in it, I feel lots better but of course it has been a very hard time coming from a 9-5 job and then straight to another job to pay the bills. First off, I learned that it is not free. No matter how many ads and people I had spoken to telling me “oh yeah, school is free”. It certainly has not been for me at least. I had a few small grants but nothing that was enough to help out with my living costs/ tuition/ books, thus leaving me to the device of taking out student loans. Since then I have been seeking scholarships but have not had the greatest luck. With this information that I have provided, I have now taken one loan out and this is my first loan. I still work two jobs picking up shifts at a bar on a weekend and receiving a student loan. I shouldn’t have to take a loan out that I am going to pay back years from now. I am having to work two jobs and do two classes a semester which to get to any or the degree that I want, will take years thus leaving me with a huge amount of debt I owe. Now, I am still lost just finding my own balance of work and…

When I first started out going to school after college I thought that I wanted to be a teacher and so right after high school I started going to school to be an elementary teacher. I quit school because I wanted to move out of my parent’s house and be on my own so I got a full time job. After I moved and got stable I went back to get my early elementary degree. After about a year and a half I got pregnant and had my son and couldn’t go to class in the morning after being up all night with a toddler and then to work so I quit school again until my son got older. My son was able to start school when he was two so I decided to go back to school and get my educational degree. As I was going to school I was also volunteering at my son’s school and that is when I decided I really didn’t want to be a teacher and I was undecided what I wanted to do and I knew I was wasting my money and time going to school so I quit once again. I got a job at a temp agency working for the temp sending people on assignments and after a year the company decided they were going to close the company in my location but my supervisor got me a job at Advanced Radiology Services doing data entry putting in codes in the system. After a few years I realized that I really like being in the health care field and wanted a career in it and I tried to move up doing different jobs in the field but I realized that in order to really move up and eventually become a director I would need a degree so I decided to get my degree in Healthcare Management so I went back to school, this time determined to make it work.…

There are four “distinct context” to motivate adult learners according to the research of Malcolm Knowles (Alexander, M., Clugston, W, & Tice, E. (2009) these are; Practical, Personal, Experiential and Idealistic Context. Practical context describes one who is motivated by intentional or specific personal gain where you deliberately choose to learn a subject or activity knowing in advance of starting the learning process that it will benefit and /or be useful to you either immediately or in the future. Personal context motivation is when one has the desire to further their education in an effort to achieve personal goals. Experiential context is when one is motivated to expand or adjust the knowledge gained through past experiences and applying it to new challenges or experiences to form updated results. Idealistic context motivation is learning for the sole purpose of learning, discovering and staying up to date and “in the know.”…

I am a mother of two wonderful sons. Unfortunately, my youngest son passed away July 2012. Then two months later my step dad passed away and I miss them both so much. Coming up on a year after losing my son is tough, but I am trying to stay strong for my other son. My family is one of the reasons why I feel motivated to further my education. I have been so excited to get back in school after seven years and I have been really motivated. For a moment I was at a standstill, but that was because I decided to procrastinate. After not passing the FCAT math I did not receive my diploma even though I have all my credits so I had to go back and get my GED. I ended up taking the GED twice. The first time I passed all parts except math and the second time I only had to take math in which I passed and exceeded the score I needed to pass. My son is now at the tender age of five and I feel as though I need to not just advise him to go to college, but as his mom set an example. He will be starting first grade in August and he is so smart. I am a full time single mom, I work full time and I am in school full time. I enjoy watching basketball, football and reading a good book. I am currently employed with the State of Florida Department of Health Central Office Children’s Medical Services. I have been an employee here for 6 and half years now and although I love what I do, I would like to further my education to one day become a teacher. I credential providers all over the state of Florida (ARNP’s/PA’s, SLP (all types), OT (all types), etc., I enjoy reading books, playing sports, spending time with my son, family and friends. My goal is to obtain my Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in Elementary Education and to one day become a great teacher. I love children and to see my son go through the different stages of learning and how teachers make a big impact on children lives they have inspired…
