When I was in high school I wasn't a very good student. I really didn't apply myself to anything. I had no dreams of going to college or doing anything special with my life. No one had ever encouraged me to do any better than I was or to try harder. My parents were not college graduates, they both had full time jobs plus nine kids to raise. I knew that there wasn't any money to send me to college, and my guidance counselor never explained to me about financial aid. I graduated, got a job and worked one dead end job after another until I got married and started a family. I spent the next fifteen years raising my daughter and encouraging her education. About a year ago my husband decided he wanted a divorce and I was left wondering; “What am I going to do now?” Since graduation I have regretted not going to college, I have always wanted to work with children, either as a counselor or in social work. My parents suggested that maybe I look into going back to school. I applied at Southern New Hampshire University and I was admitted. My first reaction was that I'm going to fail, I started by taking two classes every eight weeks and to my surprise I didn't fail and I loved it. I had to take some time off to finalize the divorce and when I was mentally ready I applied to Ashford. I started last year thinking that I was going to fail and realized that if I try hard enough I can achieve my goals. I'm not scared of failing anymore, I am however afraid of letting myself down for not trying hard enough, and for me that isn't good enough anymore. I want better for myself and I want to look in the mirror everyday and be proud of who I see.

In a few years from now, I would really like to open up some sort of cafe, specifically a boba shop. I would like for it to be located in California, specifically Southern California so it can compete with other boba shops. The menu would be filled with a variety of milk teas, flavored teas, and lattes that can be paired with various toppings such as boba, grass jelly, egg pudding, different popping boba flavors, and an array of different fruit jellies. I would also like to serve small desserts on the side, such as macarons, mille crepe cakes, and brick toast. As for the cafe itself, I would like for it to have a cozy yet minimalistic vibe from the decor. In other terms, white…

I believe that the art a civilization leaves behind can provide great insight about ideas that were important to the members of the community. One example that immediately comes to mind is the tallit, which is a sacred garment with its roots in in the Jewish community. It is popularly referred to as a prayer shawl. Over the years, I have acquired several tallis (plural form of tallit). Certainly, the functionality of the garment’s use during prayer and worship is paramount. However, I believe it can also be considered as a work of art because it requires particular skill to make, and the finished product is nothing short of amazing. Furthermore, the details found in the varieties of tallis reflect elements significant to different sects in Judaism. For example, Orthodox Jewish congregations that follow the hasidic tradition typically use prayer shawls with dark-colored stripes, as opposed to brighter-colored stripes as seen on tallis used in some Messianic Jewish congregations (Mosley, 1998). All tallis contain tzit-tzit, which are intricately knotted fringes found on the corners of the tallit. One of the most beautiful features of the tallit is the attarah (Francis, 2007). This a panel found along one horizontal border of the tallit which typically contains the scripture from the book of Numbers, chapter fifteen, in which God instructed the Jewish people to wear the tallit (Moseley, 1998). The atarah is striking because the Hebrew lettering of the scripture is in gold or silver threading. Each end of the atarah also contains some other symbolism, such as a myrtle tree to represent Hadassah, who is more commonly referred to as Queen Esther. These symbols also contain gold or silver threading. How magnificent! In short, the spiritual significance is not the only element that can be regarded. To me, the craftsmanship of a prayer shawl makes it a work of art.…

I have witnessed the stages of conflict in my relationships on a daily basis, especially when it comes to my sixteen year old daughter and her attitude, we often disagree. Our greatest challenge that we deal with the most is trying to manage her diabetes in public. Lately she has gained this attitude of she knows what is best for her. She wants to be independent and thinks that she does not need my guidance or opinion. Often times, this cause a power struggle between the child and the parent. In reality, she does not see a problem with her managing it alone. In the past, allowing her to self-manage her diabetes caused an increase in her A1-C. We resolved the problem by coming to a verbal agreement. I came up with a plan that would allow me to be trusting and for her to feel independent. The idea is for her to check her blood sugar levels with her testing kit and every Thursday we will get together and review the numbers. She had to agree with sitting down and discussing any changes that needs to be made without conflict. We both have agreed to meet one another half way and work together to ensure her health as a team.…

The first obstacle I had to overcome was the disappointment I had in myself. When I learned the extent of my dismissal from the Santa Rosa Junior College, I felt so many different emotions: I was shocked, upset, angry and understanding, all at the same time. I knew I had put myself in this position due to my not-so-dedicated semesters in the past, but now that I was serious about my education, I had a mess to clean up in order to continue at Santa Rosa Junior College. When I met with a counselor and learned all the steps I had to take in order to get myself out of this mess, I had to attend a probation/dismissal workshop, take a counseling class, and appeal my financial aid; I was stressed beyond belief. At first, I started questioning myself and doubting that I could recover from this. I took some time to think about my options and to determine if school was really what I wanted. After some time and a few discussions, I decided that I was up for the challenge. I knew that this is where I wanted to be, and that I was going to do what I needed to make this goal become reality.…

Sitting at my desk at home, a crushing feeling crept up on me. I didn’t know what to think. I’m not going to make it, am I. It was already midway through junior year of high school, and having just calculated my GPA requirements for many of the colleges I had wanted to go to, I realized that my grades were not even close to what I expected them to be. I guess I had been in denial for so long that I let them slip this far. How could I have let this happen? Where was my mind when I needed to study and do homework? Why did so many stupid things like watching T.V. or going out with friends or just mindlessly waste my time on the internet? I felt an awful combination of disappointment, anger, panic, and frustration. There was no way to fix this in my mind. My future college acceptance letters seemed bleak. What should I do next?
