Alcohol/Drugs: There are many effects of alcohol and drugs which in most times makes communication ineffective. Alcohol and drugs can cause mood swing, disorientations and even issues such as sickness, passing out and even falling and stumbling over. If under the influence of alcohol/drug up to the level were the person is caught up in any of the effects; one will not be able to communicate with the person well enough to reach a meaningful outcome. For example, if a member of staff walks into a service user room and discovered that he/she is drunk to the extent that he/she is passing out, it will be very difficult to communicate with that service user. Value and Belief: Values and beliefs are barrier to communication due to the fact that everyone has different views to religion and beliefs about god, the way we should eat, what not to eat, the way burial rites are carried out, basically how one should live their life.
As a result of these differences to the different values and beliefs, it sometimes causes disagreements, arguments frustrations and even hate towards one another. In the present of any of these, it becomes impossible to hold an effective communication. For example, 13 years old girl that is pregnant wants to have an abortion simply because it is her family belief not to get pregnant when you are not married. Explaining to her that she cannot because she lacks the maturity to make such decision will be difficult. In order to overcome this barrier to communication, the staff should use the training he/she has being giving relating to others belief and
value.
Culture Variations: Holding an effective communication with people form diverse culture is really challenging. Cultures variation can prepare people to think in a different way, see things differently, hearing and clarifying words because the same word may mean a different meaning in different cultures, even though they speak the same language. When there are diverse people who speak different language and it needs to be translated by a translator, there is a potential for misunderstandings to increases. For example, different cultures can handle the display of emotion differently. There are some cultures that can become highly emotional when certain issues are being discuss. They yell, they cry, they exhibit their anger, fear, frustration, and other feelings openly. Whilst other cultures they try to keep their emotions hidden, showing or sharing only the "rational" or certain aspects of the situation and all of these differences tend to lead to communication problems. To be able to overcome this barrier, it will be worthwhile for staff to learn about the cultural variations of the service users they deal with.
