It is important to understand how people from different backgrounds may use or interpret communication methods. I ensure I familiarise myself with the different cultures of those who I care for so I can understand how to communicate effectively with them.. What is acceptable in one culture may be an offence in another. Take for example, it is not acceptable for a woman to speak when men are speaking unless asked to speak. It also not acceptable in certain cultures for women to shake hands with men. As a support worker, it is my responsibility to read a child’s care plan and be aware of their culture.Communication can be slightly different when using it with people from different backgrounds. Communication can be interpreted in different ways by different people, this might be because they don’t speak English, or they may not understand you. This is also a barrier to communication. People may use verbal communication or non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication could be British sign language, widgets, body language and facial expressions.

There will be times when extra support is needed to communicate with a child or young person to meet their needs. There are lots of different types of services that can help to communicate effectively with individuals some of these are translators, interpreters, speech and language therapists, nurses and clinical psychologists. Translators and interpreters are there to help individuals who may speak a different language or may need some information interpreted through sign language. Speech and language therapists help with communication problems. Nurses help with any medical problems and clinical psychologists help with problems affecting mental
