Explain How You Describe Myself As A Below Average Speaker But A Decent Listener
I describe myself as a below average speaker but a decent listener. At the beginning I was still a below average speaker. For example I had memorized my poem and was able to recite my poem with ease. But once I got in the front of the class I froze and had trouble reciting the poem. I have also been a decent listener and I try to be the best audience I can be. I try to act like how I would hope my audience would act. While presenting my I-Search project I had trouble keeping track of where I was in my presentation and I kept stammering out my words. But even though I didn’t do as well as I hope I felt I improved since last time. I would have to say I am the most proud that I improved with my speaker. I got better and that why it’s my proudest

I honestly cannot choose good listeners over poor listeners, it has been my experience that listeners are split 50/50. Many people can portray good listening by making eye contact, nodding, saying things like “right”, “uh huh”, or “exactly” but when you ask them to repeat what you said they can barely give you the cliff notes. On the other hand there are plenty of people who offer similar verbal and nonverbal indicators of being involved in your speech but who are truly listening for understanding. In my past experience working in management and much earlier in entry-level positions, I’ve come to understand the importance of effective communication and with that, listening. A few helpful listening skills that employees can practice are: responding to the communication evenly regardless of if they agree or disagree with the stance of the speaker. Do not interrupt, let the speaker say what they need then provide your response likewise, while the other person is speaking it is always good to acknowledge what is being said through verbal and nonverbal cues. Our text states “Listening represents a critical part of management communications… Active listening involves hearing with a purpose and making a conscious effort to turn off internal filters and biases…Empathic listening takes place when the receiver tries to understand the other person… Critical listening occurs when the recipient goes beyond comprehending the message to evaluating it” (Baack, 2012). I can improve my listening skills by employing the techniques offered by Baack (2012) and by recognizing through my own communication what works and what has not.…

I went the first day, so I don’t have a recording to look at. Even though I cannot see my speech I still realized some of my strengths and weaknesses. Some of my weaknesses consisted of: bad transition words, sounding shaky within the introduction, and time. My strengths consisted of: good movement, good tone, good statistics, and good eye contact. To start off my introduction I was very nervous, and I don’t know for sure, but I think the audience could tell. My transition into my first main point was not the best, but once I was in my first main point I was able to settle and really stroll through the rest of my speech. Within my speech I was able to incorporate many statistics to make my point why horse slaughter is needed although I am still…

The opinion I had of my presentation before I watched my video was much different from the opinion afterwards. I thought I was nervous, legs shaking, and speaking in a tense tone. However, after watching I realized I was much more relaxed, speaking clear and professionally and that my level of professionalism was much more then I expected. I was able to continuously move around while speaking in a confident manner. Although my introduction was clearly stated in a manor that I believe captured the audience and intrigued them to learn more; I stumbled on a few words rushing through points I would have liked to expand on. Secondly, I believe I was speaking at a fast past and didn’t take the chance to add some delay between topics. I believe this was caused by my nervousness and I used my continuation of words to provide comfort in the opening slides. This bad habit continued throughout my entire presentation. Overall decreasing my level of professionalism. Although these flaws may have occurred, I believe I battled through these nerves and was able to talk in a clear voice. In my opinion, I believe I was able to do this because I knew the ins and outs of my material. I knew my material because I took the time to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. Therefore, I would assess my performance as strong, since it conveyed my topic in an informative and professional way.…

If I had to rate my feelings for speaking in front of an audience, I would have to say that I would give it a five on a scale from one to 10. The reason I say this is because I don’t love speaking in front of an audience, but I also don’t hate it either. I would say that I am very comfortable speaking in front of people and I feel that I do extremely well. I feel that I speak very well and I am very sure of myself when speaking in front of others. Also, just because I do have the ability to do so does not mean that I just love to be in front of an audience speaking. I don’t get nervous or feel uncomfortable when I have to speak in front of the class or an audience. So, I would have to say that I am pretty neutral on the topic, I don’t hate it and I don’t love it.…

Although I like to think of myself as a good listener, I know at times I am a very impatient person and can be somewhat of a bad one. To be honest I probably use all of the negative listening types daily.…
