Some options would be sitting down and talking about it, reading books about children with special needs, or even volunteering. All three of those are great ways to introduce children to special needs, both physical and mental. There are different ways to go about explaining disabilities to children depending on the child’s age. The four C’s are important to keep in mind. They are compassion, communication, competence, and comprehension (How to explain disability to a child). When explaining such a concept to a child you need to keep in mind how mature they are and how well they will
understand what you are saying. In the article “How to explain disability to a child” it states that for a 2-4 year old something along the following lines should be said. There are a lot of children who are born with all the things they need, sadly there are some children who are born without the things they need. They can be born missing things like arms, legs, or fingers. That is why they need help sometimes from things like wheelchairs or crutches to move around. When you talk to a child in a wheelchair or with crutches talk to them just like how you would talk to anyone else.
