Explain Ways To Establish Ground Rules With Learners
How can teachers/trainers establish ground rules with their learners?
What specific issues are there in your specialist area?

In this assignment I will analyse the main ways to establish ground rules with learners. I will identify issues for my specialist area and conclude which methods may work best for me as an NVQ Assessor of Electrical Installation.

Examples of grounds rules starting and finishing on time, coming prepared, listening to others without interruptions, participating, saying when you don’t understand when anyone is speaking, addressing the whole group and not just the teacher, switching off mobile phones, treating others’ contributions with respect, keeping personal issues out of the session, maintaining confidentiality

    It is important that everyone in a learning group either workplace based or in a classroom setting are able to take part and contribute, through listening, speaking and actively participating. To achieve this there needs to be an ethos in both the workplace and the classroom which promotes inclusion and mutual respect amongst peers and with the tutor. This can be achieved by establishing effective ground rules at the start of a course. Tuckman (Francis and Gould (2013: 18)) 'The creating of 'norms', expectations or rules is a natural part of the development of the group. Learners need a sense of structure and will feel psychologically safer if they know what is expected of them'. Learners will have already come across institutional rules relating to zero tolerance of bullying, general health and safety, smoking use of mobile phone etc as part of the general induction programme. What we are forming is a contract/agreement more to do with attitudes and behaviour within the immediate teaching environment.     Ground rules are useful strategy to help set the expectations of how a group can achieve a cohesive and harmonious approach when working together in the class room. When the ground rules have been established and agreed with the group, this then provides a frame of reference for the future. It is usual for the ground rules to mainly be suggested by the students to give a sense of ownership. However, teachers, might at times, wish to include suggestions in the ground rules if not thought of by the group. An example might be that of not using mobile phones during teaching sessions. This is particularly important for teachers of adults, as it is an accepted way of looking at how students will agree appropriate behaviour, and be respectful during the learning process. Where there arises some difficulties in the classroom related to behaviour and respect, the teacher can use the ground rules as one way of opening a dialogue or indeed to bring order back to the learning environment. A way of promoting appropriate behaviour and respect is to keep the established ground rules as a living agreement, so it may be added too during the life of the group.     Ground rules can be defined as a set of working parameters designed to allow learners to complete tasks. They are designed to take into account the subjects being covered, the expectations of the learners and the tutor, the age, ethnic background, gender and also provide a basic framework of what is considered as acceptable behaviour.
