Whether it be in the form of a ribbon, medal, or trophy, participation is commonly rewarded within organized sports teams as a way to give children incentive to try sports and engage in physical activities. While these trophies are intended to reward children for their contribution, the praise is undeserved, and will potentially create more harm than good in the future. A participation trophy is a tangible reminder that a child showed up to a game or tournament, but it has no fundamental value besides that. Through participation trophies, children receive the message that their success does not depend on their work ethic or abilities and by merely attending a sporting event, they have accomplished something without needing to put any effort in. Giving children the illusion that they have accomplished something when they have not, sets them up to think that they are entitled to praise or rewards. Granted, the idea of receiving a trophy or medal for participation sounds harmless because it motivates children to be active and participate in sports; however, parents should be mindful that they are potentially setting their kids up for a bad work ethic or mindset in the…

One may be worried that a child may be left out by the coach or the other teammates ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation). According to Philips, children make more friends and build stronger relationships with teammates and the coaches rather than being left out (Philips 26). Injuries also play a big part in why so many people do not play sports at a young age. Actually, having this physical activity helps strengthen bones and muscles, which help make injuries happen less. People also believe that children will have too much organization because of having to listen to the coach all of the time instead of making one's own decisions and mistakes. Organization is good for younger kids because if there is no organization at all everyone will be out of control and not knowing what to do ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation"). Even though there are many things that could happen to children playing sports, there are always ways that one can do to prevent…

Making them indulge in these type of extreme physical test makes them physically and emotionally in distress. Jessica furthers goes on saying that these sports sole focus is on winning and defeating the opponent team. This leaves the essence of the sports like learning to play as a team, maintaining your health and collaboration, behind. “School should be about learning, not sports”. Kids now a days love to play sports, but don’t like to learn. Learning, and get an education this is a very important thing in life you need it to have a good job so that you can have a family and support them. So I feel in school you must have good grades in order to play any type of sport, and if you do not then you should not be playing. A couple reasons I feel like this is for starters kids pay more attention to sports then they do in class. This is not how this should be. Kids should love to learn something new every day at school, but in some school that’s not the case. Kids need to learn.…

The reason why i think that kids should not be playing sports, is because one thing is that Most children would rather play on a losing team than sit on the bench of a winning team From the article “More Kids Are Suffering Sports Injuries”. What many people don’t see is that people are dieing because of the sports, that they do and most of these sports can cause deaths in them or even breaking something in there body. And also one reason why this is not a good thing for people to do, is because they might hurt himself and get short time memory loss so that is not a good thing for them that have sports. Regardless of proven benefits when children play sports, parents still seem to think otherwise. Many people believe having children play sports at a young age can lead to self-esteem issues, resentment, and burnout. According to Baldwin Ellis, writer for Livestrong.com, many parents fail to realize their child’s talent level, blinding them from the truth that is their child is not gifted in sports. Not fully realizing, the parents push harder and subject their child to embarrassment, resulting in self-esteem issues. The self-esteem issues can easily result in resentment from the child due to constant pressure, especially if the parent chooses to ignore the child’s wishes (Ellis para 2+). Finally, is the occurrence of burnout. Often times parents push their children too hard and try to be involved in every sport there is. The overload of activities can cause a burnout in their child meaning the child becomes stressed and no longer enjoys the activities. According to Alvin Rosenfeld, a child psychiatrist, overscheduling children is a nationwide problem and has become a way to parent (Elkins 64-70). Rather than pushing their children to participate in sports, parents should encourage. Encouraging allows the child to decide for themselves what sport they want to play, to try out different sports, or to decide sports are not for them. If sports are not for them, there are many other things they can be involved in such as music and the arts. However, with the proven benefits, children should be strongly encouraged, in a healthy way, to participate in…

Some of my evidence is from the article High Cost Of Youth Sports and they state that “parents spend $671 on average paying for child’s uniforms and gear”. Meaning that parents are spending so much money on their kid/s imagine if you had more than one kid, one kid equals $671 what if there is a family of 8 kids, I know what that is like because I have a friend who has seven siblings and all besides two play a type of sport. I also know the parents need to have good jobs in order to keep this up. Another evidence is that “1-5 parents spend up to 1,000 or higher for kid’s gear and uniforms”. From the same article High Cost Of Youth Sports. This is just saying that more money goes into youth’s sports than it seems like anything else! My last piece of evidence is “Youth sports are no longer an excellent opportunity for social involvement determined by passion and skill, but by the family's financial resources sustaining 5 billion a year industry” Yet again from the article High Cost Of Youth…

Organized sports have a lot of effects on children, whether they be positive or negative. Children are still finding out who they are and what the world is like. I chose this topic because I wanted to know childrens’ motives to do organized sports, and what effects the sports have on the them. I wanted to know the reasons kids start playing sports and, while it may be different for every child, they all had to have had some say in it. Every sport has skills that benefit children such as learning leadership, creating realistic goals they can achieve and learning to get along with others. Children also learn about personal discipline. “What's even more interesting is that kids derive those benefits whether or not they excel at their chosen sport” (Mary Forgione). When I first saw this quote I was really surprised over the fact that children learn these important life lessons even if they aren’t good at their sport. Ever since I had the chance, I played baseball. Why? I don’t really…

Activities and sports in schools is a great way for students to be involved, and to be active. I have done research and there hasn’t been one article I found on why sports shouldn’t be in schools. Having athletic programs and activities in schools are very helpful for students health, it develops team work, helps develop discipline and also perfection. School administrators, and parents, generally support high school activity programs because of the positive effect these activities appear to have on students of both genders. (Braddock P.1)…
