Explain Why Is It Important To Follow Laboratory Procedures
Task 3 – D
Why is it important for all laboratory procedures and practices to be followed and communicated through the team?
Chemical Store management – it is vital for chemical storage procedures to be followed as the potential risks that can result from using and handling chemicals can be very high. For example; mishandling of citric acid (even though it is a low risk chemical) could result in contact with the skin and/or eyes which may cause irritation, miscommunication between the staff could also cause this risk, for example if the sample is labelled incorrectly or stored in the incorrect location. With high risk chemicals it is even more important to follow procedures and practices in the lab. Hydrochloric acid, for example can cause gastritis, chronic bronchitis, dermatitis, and photosensitization if left exposed for too long – this means it is vitally important for staff to follow procedures in terms of handling and correct storage of the substance, they must also communicate amongst each other when the high risk substance is in use so all workers are aware of the precautions they must take.
Ordering Procedures – this applies to all tasks carried out in the lab therefore to

For example, a procedure that must be followed is that the flow of air exiting the fume cupboard must be regularly checked to make sure it is clear and direct to ensure than all fumes do not enter the lab. When they are checked must also be communicated between the staff so that everyone knows when/if they have been checked and when they next need to be checked. Also when using the fume cupboard another practice to follow is the correct use of equipment, e.g. goggles, gloves and lab coats should be worn at all times when using the fume cupboard just in case the lab worker does come into contact with any

Laboratory equipment can be hazardous if they are not used and maintained properly. Laboratory personnel must be trained on the proper use of laboratory equipment prior to using the equipment. Glassware is designed for a specific purpose. It should only be used for that purpose. "Makeshift" apparatus may be unstable and could lead to accidents and injuries. When selecting glassware, determine the compatibility of the glassware with the chemicals or process. Some chemicals react with glass or cause damage (etch) glass. If your process involves temperature or pressure changes, ensure the glassware can withstand the changes. Many dangers lurk in the laboratory. The most obvious risks are chemical hazards, but unsafe usage of laboratory apparatus can lead to disastrous consequences as well. There are certain procedures which must be observed when handling laboratory apparatus to reduce accidents and prevent injury. Working safely with hazardous chemicals requires proper use of laboratory equipment. Maintenance and regular inspection of laboratory equipment are essential parts of this activity. Many of the accidents that occur in the laboratory can be attributed to improper use or maintenance of laboratory equipment. This chapter discusses prudent practices for handling equipment used frequently in laboratories.…
