The down side of this is that these children are often referred to as ‘nerds’, often get bullied, have experience of racist comments and prejudice against them and has an impact not only their cognitive development but their social and emotional development, often being isolated or segregated from their peers. Language can be seen as a barrier, not having the confidence, making it harder to make social connections. The UK has become far more multicultural with pockets of diverse cultures spread across the country and locally there are a huge population from Eastern European Countries. One of the issues we have come across in our team is that children are being left to roam the streets, get themselves to school, stay home alone from an early age whilst parents work, even overnight. Although these are seen to enable development by becoming independent it can have an adverse effect on physical development as they may not be looking after themselves properly and although they feel capable do not have the social and emotional capacity to deal with things on their own which then become safeguarding
