In this essay I am going to be describing, explaining and evaluating the legislation and policies relating to health, safety and security of children in a childcare setting. I will also be describing the procedures for risk assessments and hygiene control in my current placement.
In a child care setting it is important that we follow the settings code of conduct, the code of conduct contains the rules of the setting so that you are able to understand and follow them with the children in are care in the setting. The policies and procedures should be reviewed regularly by the mangers within the setting, if anything on these policies and procedures are changed then all of the staff, student helps and volunteers should all know about these changes. The information that should be kept up to date and that should be accurate are –

Personal details and emergency contacts on the children
Details of all of the staff in the setting and emergency contacts
Records of safety checks
Children dietary requirements
Parental permission forms
Medication records
Accident and incident record books
Registers and daily records of the children’s attendance and also the adults-children’s ratio within each section of the setting
Evidence of drills and rehearsals of evacuation
The First policy and procedure that I am going to be looking at is the Data Protection Act 1998. The data protection act 1998 is a legislation that is used to prevent personal and confidential information from being passed on without a person or parent or guardians consent. This act originally applied to information that was stored on computers, but it has now been changed and applied to all information that has been stored on paper or on computer data bases.
