Many will argue that new drivers are the causes of the accidents and are not careful drivers but that is false.
Raising the age of driving will not reduce the accident rate. Accidents could be caused by lack of experience and or lack of driving skills, which both, young and older drivers can both lack of. In an article, Comparison of Crash Facilities by sex and age group, motor vehicle crashes have declined in the past decade but still have a high rate. The highest rates of car accidents range from ages 21-25, 31-35 and 41-45. The lack of experience and skill is a big factor to driving but another thing is maturity. The body develops quickly during the younger teenage years, they have a good reaction time. Most adults will argue that young kids are not mature enough yet to drive but everyone is different, a kid 17 years old could be more mature than a 40 year old man, no
difference.
Another reason why the age limit should not be raised is because raising the age limit won’t do anything, raising the age limit from 16 to 21 will not do anything besides give the new drivers less experience. From those ages, maturity doesn’t grow much at all. Most of the time accidents that are caused are caused from the bad driver that may not know what they are doing. The better the driver you are the less accidents you will get into and just be responsible on the road. In some cases the older drivers could be the causes of accidents because of their slower reaction time and or loss of vision as you get older. In this generation, many people don’t want kids to be driving because they don’t believe they are responsible and they are inconsiderate, dangerous drivers, which in some cases is true. Most kids are on their phone most of the time and some will not learn to not use their phone while driving. Also kids love to go hangout with friends and party which could lead to an accident. In conclusion, I believe that the driving age limit should NOT be raised to 21 because it won’t change anything but anger in kids that want to drive. Raising the driving age will not guarantee a reduction in car accidents. Many ups and downs and many perspectives when it comes to this subject but the driving age is age 16 for a reason.
