I am for the raising of the legal age to smoke, as is Tobbaco21 as they state,”Increasing the sale age to 21 will help to prevent young people from ever starting to smoke and to reduce the deaths, disease and health care costs caused by tobacco use.”,This is a solid point as It tells us the kind of events like reducing deaths by tobacco tremendously in youths, reduced healthcare costs for those seeking treatment, and the reduced rate of …show more content…
certain diseases caused by use of tobacco products like cancers that would all be possible if the legal age to purchase tobacco products raises to 21.
Another informative site for the legal age to smoke be raised to 21 is tobbacofreekids. They state,“Nicotine is addictive, and adolescents and young adults are more susceptible to its effects because their brains are still developing. ”, This explains a bit about what I said in the beginning and how the effects of tobacco are stronger to the less resistant teenage brain which is easier to stimulate and control in comparison to an adult 21 and up. This is why raising the smoking age to 21 is so important, when a 21 year old smokes it’s brains is matured and more resistant to tobacco poisonous chemicals like rat poison, traces of anti-freeze, and worst of all nicotine.
Although some people may say how having a higher smoking age won’t do anything more than create "casual criminals" like alcohol limits or bans on marijuana we have done (acsh.org tobacco debate.) This may be a likely problem for the future but if younger adolescents know the dangers of the tobacco and are aware of how high the legal age is they could probably understand the dangers of their actions and realize the issues they could face. Plus, most 21 year olds aren’t gonna need the extra cash from selling cigarettes since they will likely have a well paying job and moral standards. As for the kids buying the ciggarettes they may buy them but it is likely they will be caught by their parents as the scent of tobacco is easy to detect which makes stopping the child just that much easier
Lastly, Tobacco21.org says,” 75% of adults favor raising the tobacco age to 21, including 70% of current smokers and 65% of those aged 18-24.” , This is an astounding statistic of not only people in favor of raising the legal age to smoke but also how %75 of those people are smokers and how %65 are still in young adulthood. This just explains, itself, how much raising the minimum age to smoke is and how many people who are current smokers hope to never have what’s happened to them to happen to little kids.
Now I know what you’re thinking.
Why should I care about this if 18 means your an adult. Well when you’re 18, like I said earlier, you are still developing as a human being that means that your brain is easier to trick and control. This makes addiction easy and fast in 18 year olds. This issue is amplified because of how tobacco companies know tis as use it as a weapon. Instead of pandering to a more mature audience they try to pull teenager 18 years old and under and make smoking look “cool” and “bada**” while hiding the ill effects of any tobacco product. “But aren’t kids always being told the dangers of tobacco?” ,This is true but even if we tell them it’s bad tobacco companies will tell them it relieves stress, gives a small high, and other sayings that are made to lure in the pandered audience, students. So I hope that I have shown you the importance that raising the smoking age has and why it is one bill you should care
about.
