Pursuing your educational goals by enlisting in the Air Force
We have all seen the recruiting commercials from the Air Force saying if you enlist, they will pay for your college. That was the reason I enlisted, and during the last 4 years I have learned the exact process for pursuing education through the Air Force. In this paper, I plan to simply inform without being persuasive, the step by step process of using military tuition assistance. I will state facts both good about the process, and also the potential road blocks in educational goals that someone could come upon after enlisting.
The first step in the process after making it through a minimum of 8 weeks in boot camp is completing your tech school training. Tech school is training for your assigned job, which depending on what job you’re going for, is between 6 weeks and 1.5 years. Yes, that’s a huge range, and I recommend you find out from your recruiter the length of the tech school for any job that interests you, ahead of time. Mine was 9 months in length.
After completing tech school you go to your first duty station to do your job. Once you get to your station, you will have on the job training that you must certify on before you can begin doing your job. The length of this on job training also varies greatly from one job to another. All of these tasks must be completed before you can apply for tuition assistance and begin working on your degree. For me, I had one of the longer tech schools in the military as well as an additional on job training that took 4 months to complete. By the time I was done with my training I had already completed almost a year and a half of my enlistment. By this time technically, I could have begun taking classes. The problem was I was working 13 hour shifts, 4 days on two days off, and was a newlywed. This did not make it realistic for me to take any classes during that time. This like all things in the
