My brother, Ramez, is the definition of the word optimist. An optimist is a person who holds the belief that good ultimately outweighs evil in the world. Firstly, Ramez attempts to look at every situation on the brighter rather than the darker side. If he were to be robbed, he would say something along the lines of “at least I was not killed”. If one were to be completely failing at a hobby, assignment, career choice or having a mid-life crisis, Ramez would find a way to make it appear as if it is not the worst thing to happen and that a positive artifact has somehow come out of the negative situation. Now, this is a moderately beneficial characteristic to have in a person, for optimists will always be able to bring ones and their selves’ spirits…
Like Celie, I am an optimistic person because I do not let statistics define who am I and what I am capable of. Even though I come from a background that would not be able to be successful in society, I do not let that stop me. The world does not know my capabilities like I do.…
Optimism may be harmful when an individual only focuses on the “bright side” of life ignoring negatives or “realities” one can be taken off guard by unhappy moments in life. Simply being unprepared or unable to cope effectively with these negative events causes stress to one’s mental health. These negative events can make a person resentful and may cause the individual to isolate themselves from others. People who always look…
Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…
Unrealistic Optimism is a cognitive bias that causes a person to believe that they are less likely to experience a negative and more likely to experience a positive event compared to others.…
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information” (Positive Thinking). Being optimistic is absolutely mental. The Mayo Clinic shares the most effective ways to becoming optimistic, “If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way” (Positive thinking). In order to stay positive the person needs to know they can get over the challenges, “One fundamental attitude is to presume that all problems can be solved and we possess in us the ability to solve the problem in hand. Adopting such an attitude, we would explore all resources and go the extra mile to get things done” (Yew). It is possible to stay positive when conditions are not running…
Ben Reinwald 7/3/2014 SMS-8 E.L.A Keep your head Up What is optimism in the face of despair? Optimism is always seeing the positive things in life. If you're an optimistic person, you will see a glass half full, rather than a glass half empty. Despair is loss of hope or hopelessness. So, optimism in the face of despair means to see the positive in something that seems so hopeless.…

A positive attitude helps me to cope more easily with the daily affairs of life. A positive attitude can bring optimism into one’s life, making it easier to avoid failure. If it is adopted as a way of life, it will bring constructive changes into my life as well as the lives of others making us happier, brighter, and more successful through inspiration. With my positive attitude I see the brighter side of life, becoming optimistic and always expecting the best to happen. It is certainly a state of mind that is well worth developing and strengthening. My own positive outlook can greatly benefit my community mentally, physically and emotionally.…
I had always been an optimistic individual and tended to lean towards the “bright side” to every situation. I realized that I was responsible for my own happiness and dwelling on the negatives would only serve to cut down on my happiness and limit the scope of my experiences.…
Optimism is hard for me to achieve. I’ve been through so many tough times in my seventeen years and it is very difficult to stay positive. I’ve had to suffer through many broken bones and surgeries, depression and the things that go along with it, and also being bullied in school. I try to stay as optimistic as I can. Being positive and hoping for the best is about all I can do for myself. My life definitely has not been the best but even through all of the terrible things I’ve endured, I can still keep a positive outlook on things.…
“A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and sparks extraordinary results,” said Wade Boggs. Talent is nothing without optimism. A positive attitude is crucial for success because it motivates one to work harder and develops a passion for life.…
Optimism is said to have a great effect on mental health, especially the association between optimism and the presence of mood and depressive disorders. It has been found that the more optimistic a person is the more likely they are to not have depressive disorders and suicidal ideation. The article also states “that compared to optimists, pessimists nurtured little hope for the future and were more at risk for depressive and anxiety disorders, with subsequent impairment of social functioning and quality of life” (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2894461/ ).My opinion on this subject is mostly that of agreement; I know in my personal experience with those who have depressive disorders they do tend to have dominantly negative outlook on the future, I believe that it is possible that optimism definitely helps to deflect depression and brings about a better quality of life. I read somewhere the other day that optimist may be just as wrong or even more so than pessimist, regardless they would have happier lives. I do not think that optimism is the cure for depression and mood disorders as I do believe that a lot of the time it can be genetics and situations that trigger such mental ailments but I do believe a realistic amount of optimism is necessary to survive these types of disorders. I myself have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 and borderline personality disorder, I know that no amount of optimism would have prevented the bipolar disorder but using optimism as a coping skill has brought me through very many severe lows. I would go as far as to say that my optimism as well as my support system has even saved my life and several times prevented me from suicide attempts. Optimism has also been a key factor in my sobriety; I was four years clean this March.…
One of the most important qualities to be successful is when people are optimistic. When a person has a good mental attitude everything comes naturally, in a good way. Sometimes a person could have a problem, but this person can face it, can think in different ways to affront it. On the other hand a person whom is pessimistic rarely can face problems, this…
