New-borns have strong primitive reflexes that gradually disappear around 4 months of age. These are in response to a specific stimulus such as when a baby is in the supine position and the head is turned to one side and the response is the arm and leg of the same side becomes extended.
Postural reactions help infants from the age of 2 months to automatically maintain posture in a changing environment.
Such as when you hold an infant in an upright position and tilt them, the head will then automatically move to stay upright.
Locomotor reflexes appear in infants earlier then the corresponding voluntary movements and they typically disappear before the infant attempts the voluntary movement. Stepping, swimming and crawling are the three locomotor reflexes. When the infant is in the prone position and the adult applies pressure to the sole of one or both feet alternately it causes the infant to perform the crawling locomotor reflex.
