The idea of external influences can range from simple little things, all the way to larger more abstract ideas. Most every person will accept that they are influenced by their surroundings. For example, the recommendation of a friend can change the final decision on which car to buy. But going deeper into it, each and every memory created was influenced by external forces. Children are raised into a world with prebuilt beliefs, culture and tradition. What we then do with those prepackaged worlds is dependent on the larger society we live in. In his Ted Talk in November of 2011, Julian Baggini introduced the idea that you are, “The sum of your parts”. He discusses that you are made of your physical parts, your memories and your experiences. The influences of your physical self were mostly dismissed in the ted talk, but physical limitations etc. can be an influence when in combination with the expectations of your world. Mental conditions are also influences, although the debate on where to classify them, internal or external, isn’t 100%. Getting back to the Ted Talk itself, Julian Baggini suggests that rather than having a core that is then built upon by memories and experiences, human beings have no core. We are created solely from the influences around us and possibly inside us depending on how you’d like to look at
