Abstract
Facebook is a social network people use to stay connected, share photos, messages, and express what matters to them. This study will examine the negative effects Facebook use has on self-esteem. We will survey sixty students throughout California State University of Long Beach campus. Using a Likert scale we will measure the levels of self-esteem by frequent or infrequent Facebook usage. For example students will be asked to rate their self-worth on a scale from one to seven. Including other questions such as how long do you stay on Facebook a day? Gender difference will be examined to analyze collected data and to discover findings. This research is important to better understand the negative effects Facebook will have on students. The results of Facebook frequency were significant with self-esteem. The lower the Self -Esteem the longer the time spent on Facebook or the higher the self-esteem the less time spent on Facebook.
Facebook Effects on Self-Esteem
Technology has shaped and changed the way society thinks and behaves. With the internet’s rising popularity in the 1990’s, social networking sites also began to make their way into mainstream American culture. Young people, in particular those in their late teens and early 20’s, were and still are the primary users of these social networking sites. Facebook, one of the most popular social networks with college students, has over a billion users worldwide (Thompson & Lougheed, 2014). Individuals on Facebook can post pictures, videos, statuses and share details about their everyday lives. It also provides a sense of belongingness and facilitates communication and sharing of information between individuals anywhere in the world (Vogel, Rose, Roberts & Eckles, 2014).
