Mathematics is a subject recognized as the mother of all learning with other subjects deriving their concepts from it, in both the arts and sciences. It is also an international language and is essential in almost every field; handling money, measurements in fashion, angles in sports such as bowling and billiards, technology and economics. Consequently, a good performance in the subject is important.
1. Lack of Appreciation
Children pay little attention to mathematics when they do not appreciate its importance. Students should learn from a tender age the importance and application of mathematics in their life -- calculating expenses, budgeting their allowances and sharing out their items in fractions. After all, the more parents talk about fashion and politics with their children the more they believe that those are the important things to focus on. Parents can do the same with math.
Fear
Students misconceive mathematics as a difficult subject. With this conception, they do not attempt to understand the subject, subsequently causing them to fail. The fear arises from scenarios such as previous failure, discouragement from a parent who did not perform well, harsh teachers or comparison to the top performing students. All these cause the student to despair and give up.
Teachers
Teachers are the primary contact that children interact with when learning, their involvement in the learning process is crucial. A teacher 's bad attitude, poor teaching skills and lack of involvement with the children when teaching, results to poor performance. Instead of teaching just the theoretical aspect of mathematics, showing its practicality in everyday life enhances interest and better performance. Encouragement from a teacher also boosts a student 's confidence.
Poor Education System
Mathematic tests take place in scenarios that are time set. The possibility of failure and public embarrassment causes anxiety in the students.
