Have you ever stepped back and took a look at how many people, including children and/or young adults are homeless? Homelessness is when an individual lacks housing. It isn’t talked about enough. You don’t see it in the news a lot. But in reality, homelessness is a very big factor in the world. So many people become homeless due to several different reasons including: addiction, domestic violence, mental illness, and job loss. These factors put people at risk for having somewhere to sleep, bathe, and eat regularly. Homelessness is a very serious topic.
Did you know that between 2.3 and 3.5 million people experience homelessness? About 1.5 million American children are homeless every year (Facts and Figures: The Homeless). That is a lot of people once you think about it. These are everyday people who have hit a bump in the road and no longer have a house to call theirs. These people have to sleep on the streets, in alleyways, anywhere that they can get a place to lie down. They go through the everyday struggle of whether or not they will have food to eat, drinks to stay hydrated, clean clothes to wear, and a place to rest.

This woman’s name is Jeanine Perkins. She is fifty four years old. She had been staying at a local shelter. According to Bangor Daily News, Jeanine was in the shelter because of violence in her home. She left and lived in her vehicle for two months. She had experienced two important deaths in her family – her brother and her mother. She was at the shelter for three months. She says, “I know I’m here for a purpose. I don’t know what it is, but God does.” (Rhoda) I found that quote to be inspiring. She is a homeless person, has experienced two deaths, and still carries on and has hope for her
