INTRODUCTION:
[]And in this film, the old man involved in a journey to look for a wonderful place, a legendary waterfall. Do you remember the name of this fall? []Although Paradise fall doesn’t exist but it was inspired by a real fall, the highest waterfall in the world. That is Angle fall. And I want ask you 1 more question, can you tell me which country does the fall belong to?
Besides this highest waterfall, Venezuela is also famous for the kingdom of beautiful women. Lying on the northern coast of South American with the official language is Spanish, people call Venezuelan culture is a melting pot which includes the combination of Spanish, African and indigenous culture.
According to Hofstede, today I will present to you 4 …show more content…
main points of Venezuelan culture which include some basic information that might be useful for your future career. These are Power distance, Individualism, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty avoidance.
Now let’s move to the first dimension,
POWER DISTANCE
You can see the score of power distance of Venezuela is 81, which is very high. Therefore, social status is very important to Venezuelans. So always address people in order: Academic /Professional title - Surname - First name. For example: Linguistic Doctor Duong Thi Hoang Oanh. And remember that Your business card also has to be printed in this form.
When you are a new commer of a group, always introduce yourself to the oldest person first and show respect with the older people.
Senior position are usually held by the upper class, the leader of the group -also the the person who has more power will give the final decision.
Appearances matter to Venezuelans. Men should dress conservatively, in dark business suits. Women should always maintain an elegent and beautifully dressed apearence with jewellery and make-up to show that you are not from the low class.
The next dimension I want to discuss about is
INDIVIDUALISM
Venezuela is one of the most collectivistic country. They refer doing the business after building relationship. Although, nowsaday young business people just focus on business documents but it’s still a advantage for you to have broad relationships.
In Venezuelan business culture, interpersonal skills, such as the ability to understand how people think and feel and have good communicating skills are often considered more important than professional competence and experience.
Members of the extended family live closer to one another often on the same block.
Venezuelans are proud of their hospitality so never decline an offer of coffee because they will think you are not interested in them.
The third dimension is
MASCULINITY/ FEMININITY
Although people said that men and women should be equal but the fact is that women in Venezuela didn’t have their voice.A country where violence against women was widespread and according to ( the Venezuelan daily newspaper Diario Vea, 2008) it is estimated that every 15 minutes at least one Venezuelan woman was attacked.
However, in some recent years this problem seems to be improved. Nowsaday, we can easily see women in business, medical doctors, judges and even in engineers, architects…
Nowsaday, woman has more rights in the famiy, although male is still considered the head of the household, modern Venezuela woman is the person who gives familial decisions and keeps money of the family. I think this point is quite similar to Vietnamese woman right, our mother.
And the last point I want to present to you is
UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE
At 76 Venezuela has a high score on Uncertainty Avoidance which means that Venezuelans are risk averse. Therefore, new ideas and concepts are not easily accepted, if you want to change their mind you have to make a great effort with strong evidences to support your ideas or you are powerful enough. So if you want to run a new product, Venezuela’s definitely not a great
market.
Rules are not necessarily followed , it depends on the group’s opinions and whether the leader is open-minded or not.
Venezuelans are quite conservative. There are rules for everything, so you're better following them and staying away from some taboos that might make Venezuela people have bad impressions about you. Such as
Making an O.K. sign is an extremely rude gesture so you should Avoid it.
Beckoning or pointing with the index finger, putting one’s feet on the furniture are considered very bad forms. So you shouldn’t do anything of those.
CONCLUSION
Venezuelan culture is similar to Vietnamese culture so it’s quite easy for you to remember. First, always show respect to people who are older than you or have more power. Secondly, should avoid breaking any rules and reducing some unnecessary hand gesture because that could be a taboo. And finally, always response warmly to Venezuelans if they are sympathetic with you.
