Grandparents do not exist, and there are no real relationships between the family members. Jonas is given a memory by The Giver and the memory shows grandparents. Jonas then asks a question concerning the topic about “more” family members outside of his unit. Then The Giver answers his question and explains “Grandparents” to him. Jonas never forgot about that memory; that memory was The Giver’s favorite and it is Jonas’ favorite too.
