As a nurse I come to understand that there are different types of family with each one of them with its own unique and specific problems. All these problems have great impact on the health of value and productivity of individual family members. There are specific roles and functions that are expected of families within the community if the individual, family and community health will be enhanced.
The family is expected to act as economic source and protect the physical health of its members by providing adequate nutrition and health services. Occasionally, patient may present with some clinical symptoms and signs but on family assessment it might be psychological or social problems that are leading to all the symptoms.
As a nurse, the first thing to do in assessing the health of the family is to focus first on the family unit and then on individuals in the family. The health history is taken first and then physical assessment is done. If there is need to correct information or misconception this is done and if need be referral is made.

Methods in family therapy are varied and ranges from self report questionnaires, observational techniques and physiological readings to therapist rating scale.
Generally, current research supports that family therapy when conducted by people who know the theories and techniques well can be helpful for a wide range of problems. It would seem that overall the different models of many family therapies are equally valid and
