Why were schools traditionally set up to give students the summer off? When schools started mostly all of students came from a farming family, and they needed to be out of school to help on the farm. Many people know that there are not as many students coming from farming families today, so why do most schools still operate on this schedule? One set of data shows that year-round schooling helps parents, because they do not have to pay for child care for long periods of time (Ophiem, 1995). This reflects that with year round schooling families will not have to search or pay for child care during the summer. Furthermore, child care today is extremely expensive unless you have a family member willing to help you out. Also, another point brought to attention is how many families today are single parent families. “With year-round schooling, parents will not have societal pressures to find jobs that enable optimal vacation time or favorable summer hours so that they are home with their children while they are off from school” (O’Sullivan, 2013, p. 398). It is shown that year-round schooling will help parents to pursue jobs that will make them the most money, and parents will not have to worry about getting enough time off during the summers to be with their kids. With the year-round schedule students receive the same amount of time away from school. Students are still required to go to school for 180 days, but instead of summers of they receive a short break every nine weeks. This proves that students receive the same amount of opportunities for family time when compared to the traditional school schedule. With year-round schooling students have the same amount of time off, but with the schedule they can spend more time with family throughout the year and not just in the summertime. Others argue that students will get sick of school on the year-round schedule.
Additionally, some believe that a year-round schedule increases student burn out. This is also a misconception. In the year-round schedule, students get more frequent breaks to relieve them and prevent burnout. With the year-round schedule students receive a break after every nine weeks which is equivalent to a grading quarter. This means that students will get a break each time they complete a quarter of the school year. One set of research concluded that there was higher attendance in year-round schools (O’Sullivan, 2013). In a personal interview Emma Smith
