Better Ways to Farm for a Better World
Fig. 1. This illustration suggests how the future of agriculture can look in a few years (Postolach).
Feed a growing world or destroy our planet; which one would you choose? Our population is beginning to grow while our natural resources are starting to become limited for our use. We are wasting water without thinking about how we will get water when it’s completely gone and also expanding our farms land to produce more food for the people consuming it. Water shortage is a growing problem; it is happening all over the world and can lead us to starvation if we continue to waste it. Farmers are taking over land globally and cutting down forests in order to expand their crops to feed our population today. We can stop the problems and engage in the solution, which is to promote new ways of farming that can save us water and land with drip irrigation and vertical farming. Drip irrigation is the solution to conserve water while vertical farming will allow us to expand our farms vertically and not horizontally, allowing us to also conserve our land on earth. So, can we conserve our water and land for future generations? Yes we can, we need to realize that by avoiding this problem not only will we continue to worsen it but we will be on the verge of life or death. Our population will begin to take over our resources along with farming and if we can’t stop a growing world we can stop agriculture and learn new ways to farm efficiently.
Earth is considered the planet of water since seventy per cent of it is covered in water. It may also come to a surprise to know that from the water available for our use, not even half of it is safe for human consumption. Water is needed for humans to survive so many people count on surface water and even groundwater to provide for everyday essentials. For example people depend on water for drinking and even to
